Sanford senior Luke “LJ” McFarland Jr. was selected to participate in the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl at Don Roux field in Lewiston on July 15.
The Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic is a prestigious game played by the top senior football players in Maine. More than 140 senior All-Star football players and cheerleaders from over 60 different high schools across Maine are nominated and selected by the Maine Football Coaches Association to participate in the event.
McFarland was a standout running back and cornerback for the Spartans. This year he was the only Spartan selected and he will be representing Sanford as a cornerback in the Lobster Bowl.
“I think that the Lobster Bowl will be a good look [at] what college football is going to be like,” said McFarland.
On April 29, McFarland officially committed to continue his academic and football career in college at Husson University.
The Lobster Bowl requires each player and cheerleader to participate in a fundraiser for Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals. Participants each have to fundraise a minimum of $500. The link for McFarland’s fundraising can be found here.

“Football means a lot to me. It’s done a lot for me, keeping me out of trouble growing up and in shape,” said McFarland. “I believe that the sport builds character for young men and it’s made me a lot of friendships that I hope last a lifetime.”
Varsity Football Head Coach, Mike Fallon, said, “LJ was an outstanding and dedicated football player for us the past four seasons. We wish him all the best as a student and a member of the football team this upcoming fall at Husson University.”
