Sanford varsity athletics sweep opening weekend

Boys and girls varsity soccer, football, volleyball, golf, and field hockey all take wins in fall sports season openers

It was a fantastic opening weekend of fall sports as all fall varsity teams found victories in their first contests of the season.

Boys varsity soccer defeated cross-town rival, Massabesic, 4-0 on Thursday, August 31. Sophomore Gavin Hebler scored two goals and junior Cole Adawadkar had two assists. Junior Richie Simpson blasted a goal from 30 yards out while sophomore Levi Mann had an outstanding game on defense as well as scoring a goal.

Girls varsity soccer defeated the Kennebunk Rams 4-0 on Thursday, Aug. 31 as well, in a game dedicated to Chace Fromwiller, a Sanford Middle School student battling a rare form of cancer. To donate to Chace’s Cancer Relief Fund, find his GoFundMe link here.

Senior captain Hailey Tarbox scored two goals and tallied two assists. Senior captain Ailey Mann and sophomore Ava Hudson also scored for the Spartans. Sophomore Goalie Sophie Olivo made four saves in the shutout.

Field Hockey won 4-0 against Bonny Eagle on Saturday, Sept. 2. Junior Audrey Payeur led the Spartans with two goals. Sophomore Natalie Payeur and freshman Zoey McCann also added one goal a piece.

Football defeated the Scarborough Red Storm at home in an exciting 41-17 victory on Friday, Sept. 1 after the Spartans recovered from a 17-13 deficit with 28 unanswered points in the second half.

Senior Jordan Bissonnette rushed for three touchdowns. According to the Portland Press Herald, senior “Tylor Pitman started the rally when he caught a 38-yard TD pass from [senior] Tanner McCann in the third quarter for a 20-17 lead. An 11-yard run by [junior] Rhylen Avery put Sanford ahead 27-17 after three quarters.

Bissonnette scored his third touchdown on a 5-yard run in the fourth and [senior] Cameron Suhy had a weaving 20-yard run late in the fourth for another score. [Sophomore] Matty Hebert rounded out five of Sanford’s six scoring drives with an extra-point kick.”

Although Golf fell to Kennebunk on Tuesday, August 29, they defeated Noble on Thursday, August 31 in a 7-6 victory. Sanford won by total team strokes 271-276. For the Spartans, senior Zachary Parison and junior Brayden Baron were victorious in their head-to-head match play.

Volleyball defeated Windham 3-0. Junior Samone Gallagher led the Spartans in kills, while sophomore libero Leah Soucy led in digs. Sophomore Claire Odette also provided an impressive showing.

Cross Country (XC) competed at Falmouth on Thursday, Aug. 31. Freshman Isaac Pelletier was the top finisher for the Spartans, followed by junior Caleb Pelletier and senior Greggory Waterman.
