While weather interferes with some games, the Spartans keep powering through the start of the season
Another week of sports is in the books, and while the weather continued to challenge schedules, the Spartans powered through their contests.
Boys Soccer
Boys varsity soccer traveled to Biddeford on Sept. 7, falling to the Tigers 3-1 in a physical game resulting in three yellow cards between the two teams. Omarian Rose scored in the 65th minute from an assist by Colin Carpenter.
Sanford finished the game with 13 shots on goal, 3 each coming off the feet of Carpenter, Cole Adawadkar and Levi Mann.
The Spartans fell to Kennebunk at home on Sept. 9. Despite the loss, Beckett Barlow had a strong game in net, facing pressure for the majority of the game. and seeing 23 on-net shots from the Rams. Gavin Hebler had Sanford’s lone goal in the 70th minute off of a direct kick outside the box.
The Spartans host Portland up next on Thursday, Sept. 14.
Girls Soccer
The girls soccer game against Windham on Sept. 6 was postponed due to weather and will instead fall on Monday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
The Spartans defeated Noble High School 2-1 on Saturday, Sept. 9 in a physical match. Senior captains Ailey Mann and Hailey Tarbox each scored for the squad, with Tarbox and Ava Hudson tacking on assists. Sophie Olivo had 13 saves in net.
They host Marshwood on Wednesday, Sept. 13 at home.

Field Hockey
The game against Falmouth on Thursday, Sept. 7 was postponed due to weather. They face South Portland/Westbrook Co-op on Wednesday, Sept. 13 and travel to Kennebunk on Saturday, Sept. 16.
Football
Football tied with Dover High School (N.H.) 7-7 after the weather ended the game early. Quarterback Tanner McCann found Makai Bougie in the endzone and Matty Hebert made the extra point.
The Spartans host South Portland on Friday, Sept. 15.
Golf
Golf traveled to Marshwood on Tuesday, Sept. 5, falling to the Hawks 1.5 to 11.5. Braydon Baron and Zachary Parison both shot scores of 48 to lead Sanford.
The team then traveled to Biddeford, falling to the Tigers 11-2. Ayden Lockard shot a 45, Baron shot a 46, and Parison shot a 47.
“Although we have gone through some tough losses, I feel the team as a whole are taking steps in the right direction and are showing some progress towards getting better,” said Coach Kearson.
The team faces Massabesic on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and Kennebunk on Thursday, Sept. 14.
Volleyball
Volleyball defeated Massabesic 3-0 on Sept. 6. Junior Samone Gallagher led the Spartans with 9 kills and 5 blocks.
“This game was an amazing team effort,” said Coach Hill. “Every player stepped on the floor, owned their roles, and executed the challenge.”

XC
Cross Country (XC) held their Senior Recognition Meet at home on Monday, Sept. 11 against Gorham, Deering and Kennebunk, with the Spartans boys coming in second and Spartan girls coming in third. Gregg Waterman closed the gap on front-runner Isaac Pelletier to significantly help the boys score.
“The boys made tremendous strides in pushing toward their goal of qualifying for the state championship,” Coach Smith said. “They pushed past Kennebunk, a team that beat us at the preseason relays and they were very close to beating a strong Gorham team.”
Caylee Dubois shaved two minutes off of her personal best in the girls’ race, side by side with newcomer Eliza Cyr.
“The girls were able to score as a team for the first time in two years, and are making their mark as we push through the season,” Smith added.
