Another week of varsity sports is complete – here’s how our Spartans fared:
Boys Soccer
The Spartans fell to Scarborough in a tough 7-0 loss on Tuesday, Sept. 19 on the road. Despite the loss, Coach Puffer expressed his pleasure with the boys showing some improvement in stringing together some strong passes and looking for each other down the field. “They never gave up and continued to fight,” he said.
The Spartans then traveled to Bonny Eagle on Saturday, Sept. 23, falling to the Scots 2-0. Beckett Barlow had 13 saves.
The Spartans host Noble on Tuesday, Sept. 26, host Deering on Thursday, Sept. 28 and travel to Thornton Academy on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Girls Soccer
The Spartans continued their undefeated streak on Wednesday, Sept. 20, defeating Deering on the road 2-0. After a standstill in the first half, Hailey Tarbox scored 10 minutes into the second half, then later sent a through ball to Julissa McBarron to seal the game.

They faced their first loss of the season in a tough game against #4 ranked Cheverus on Friday, Sept. 22, falling 2-0. Sophie Olivo made 8 saves.
The 4-1 Spartans host Gorham on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and travel to Massabesic on Friday, Sept. 29.
Field Hockey
The Spartans faced their first loss of the season against Biddeford on Thursday, Sept. 21, falling to the Tigers 2-1. Despite outshooting the Tigers 13-7, the Biddeford goalkeeper put up 12 saves to keep the Tigers on top. Ellie Davis scored the lone goal for the Spartans, assisted by Audrey Payer. Megan Sheppard had 5 saves.
They dropped another tough loss to Falmouth on Saturday, Sept. 23, with a score of 1-0. Sheppard had 6 saves in the match.
The Spartans play three games this week: Noble on Monday, Sept. 25, travel to Gorham on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and host Marshwood on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Football
The Spartans traveled to Marshwood this Friday, Sept. 22 for a 6 p.m. battle, winning a decisive 42-6 victory.
Jordan Bissonnette scored twice in the first quarter along with Makai Bougie‘s pick 6 to put the Spartans up 21-0. In the second quarter, Cam Suhy‘s 7-yard run sent the team into the halftime up 28-7.
Carter Mills’ 9-yard run and Rhylen Avery’s 54-yard run sealed the game with two touchdowns in the third quarter.
Matty Hebert went 6 for 6 in field goals.
The 3-0-1 squad hosts Thornton Academy this Friday at 7 p.m.
Golf
The Spartans faced Noble on Tuesday, Sept. 19, defeating the Knights 9-4. Brayden Baron paced Sanford with a low round of 4, where he was also the low medal winner.
“This match was a grind, just like the first one,” said Coach Kearson. “It was tied going down the stretch. It came down to our 5th and 6th players, Noah Corliss and Brody Baron, to pull us through.”
The Spartans competed against Marshwood on September 21, defeating the Hawks 7.5-5.5. Zachary Parison paced the Spartans and won a low medal by shooting a 43.
“The kids did a great job of grinding and getting points where they could,” Kearson said.
The Spartans will celebrate their seniors on Thursday, Sept. 28 at the Sanford Country Club.
Volleyball
The varsity volleyball team traveled to Portland on Tuesday, Sept. 19, snapping the Bulldogs’ undefeated streak by defeating them 3-1. Samone Gallagher led the team in kills. Claire Odette led the team in blocks. Leah Soucy leads the team in digs. Ellery Genest led the team in assists. Notable performances were also given by Olivia Farrington, Gabby Favolise, and Ashley Elias.
“On the road after losing two matches in a row, we were both mentally and physically prepared to take on Portland, who was 4-0 before last night’s match,” said Coach Hill.
“We knew it was going to be a challenging fight but we still emerged victorious,” he continued. “We lost the first set 20-25, but the Spartans continued to believe in themselves and each other. With a huge momentum shift in the second set, the Spartans won the next 3 sets straight finishing the match 3-1.”

They fell to Scarborough 3-0 on Thursday, Sept. 21.
XC
Cross Country (XC) traveled to Windham High School on Friday, Sept. 22 to compete against Windham, Westbrook and Thornton Academy. The boys took second and the girls took fourth.
Sophie Therrien pulled Cynthia Carroll through to a 5-minute personal record in a meet where the team was holding back their pace.
“We held back our pace for this league meet in preparation for the Manchester Invitational that we would be running the following day,” explained Coach Smith. “It was encouraging to see the boys team still beat two teams and come close to Windham even though we were all about one minute slower than our normal 5k pace.
Less than 24 hours later the team traveled to Manchester, NH for the Varsity Invitational, which is open to boys and girls in the top 40.
Isaac Pelletier ran 18:05 a new personal record and benchmark toward qualifying for the state championship. Annalise Stimmell ran in her first race of the year and placed in the top 100. Addie Fiandanca ran strong with Caitlin Hanselmann and Eliza Cyr to solidify a front-four pack that will be helpful in the postseason.
“The Manchester Invitational is one of the most revered and respected meets in New England,” said Smith. “The most successful teams compete and it is a tremendously challenging course that even includes a ski slope! The team performed spectacularly amongst tough competition.”
