Varsity Sports Recap: Oct. 2-7

Another week of varsity sports is complete – here’s how our Spartans fared:

Sanford fell 4-0 to Gorham on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Beckett Barlow finished the game with 16 saves. Gorham coaches Gorham coaches expressed their praise of the play by Gavin Hebler and Cole Adawadkar.

The team traveled to Westbrook on Thursday, Oct. 5, losing to the Blue Blazes 3-1. Antowayne Chisholm scored the lone goal in the game, assisted by Barlow who made 11 saves.

The Spartans wrapped up the week with a tough 1-0 loss against fourth-ranked Deering. Barlow played an incredible game in net making some terrific saves all game long with one unlucky goal.

During Homecoming week, the boys host Marshwood on Monday, Oct. 9 at 6:00 (Safari Theme). They host Cheverus on Thursday, Oct. 12.

The Spartans defeated Bonny Eagle 3-0 on Monday, Oct. 2. Bella McCall assisted Annie Stimmell for the first goal. McCall then scored off an assist from Ailey Mann. In the second, half Hailey Tarbox scored. Goalie Sophie Olivo had 4 saves.

They tied a talented Falmouth team 1-1 on Wednesday, Oct. 4 in a tough double-over battle. Tarbox scored for Sanford.

They bounced back to defeat Biddeford 8-2 on the road on Friday, Oct. 6. Tarbox, Stimmell, and Audrey Cote each scored two goals, while Ava Hudson and Brielle Landry each added one apiece.

During Homecoming week, the girls host Windham on Monday, Oct. 9, then Scarborough on Wednesday Oct. 11 (red, white, and blue theme), followed by a game at Westbrook on Friday, Oct. 13.

The Spartans defeated Kennebunk 4-0. on Monday, Oct. 2.

The team bounced back and defeated Massabesic 2-1 at home on Thursday, Oct. 5. Audrey Payeur scored both goals for the Spartans. Sadie Sevigny had two assists and Paige Sevigny also assisted off a penalty corner. Megan Sheppard had 5 saves.

During Homecoming week, the Spartans host the Portland-Deering co-op (neon theme) at 6 p.m., with a quick turnaround game on the road to Cheverus on Wednesday, Oct. 11. They wrap up the week on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Scarborough.

Sanford fell to the now 6-0 Kennebunk Rams on Saturday, Oct. 7. A full game recap can be found here in the Portland Press Herald.

The Spartans host Bonny Eagle for their Homecoming Game on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Sanford fans are encouraged to show up in their red and white.

The Spartans traveled to Bonny Eagle on Tuesday, Oct. 3, defeating the Scots 3-0. Samone Gallagher dominated the court with 13 kills, 10 digs and 7 blocks. Leah Soucy protected the back row with 11 digs and had 7 service aces. Claire Odette and Ashley Elias both added on 3 service aces each for the Spartans.

“This was a great win for us,” said Coach Hill. “We started down in the first set 1 – 9. It’s amazing what mindset can do in team sports. The girls believed in each other regardless of any score that was present… Volleyball is a weird sport in the sense that momentum has such a strong force over the game. Anything can happen!”

They then traveled to Noble on Thursday, Oct. 5, where they defeated the Knights 3-0. Gallagher and Odette had outstanding offensive and defensive performances. Gabriella Favolise, Ellery Genest, Olivia Farrington, and Leah Soucy all provided several outstanding defensive plays and each added a few service aces to the score. Madison Nadeau had her starting debut as one of our outside hitters.

During Homecoming week, the Spartans host Kennebunk on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and host Biddeford on Thursday, Oct. 12 (Tropical Theme).

Sanford competed against Marshwood, Massabesic, and Noble on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Gabe Waterman significantly closed the gap between himself and the front four runners. “

The boys team worked hard to pack up our first through fifth runners and closed the gap between us and Marshwood,” said Coach Smith. “The girls didn’t field a scoring team but ran well despite the heat.”
