Homecoming Varsity Sports Recap: Oct. 9-14

Another week of varsity sports is complete – here’s how our Spartans fared:

During Homecoming week, the boys fell to Marshwood 3-1 on Monday, Oct. 9. Students showed up in Safari Themed Attire. Cole Adawadkar scored in the 79th minute, assisted by Gavin Hebler. Beckett Barlow had 14 saves.

They hosted Cheverus on Thursday, Oct. 12 for their Senior Recognition Night, falling to the Stags 2-0. Barlow had 10 saves. Sanford finished the game with 11 shots on goal.

They play their final game of the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Falmouth.

During Homecoming week, the girls hosted Windham on Monday, Oct. 9. Sanford lost in overtime 3-2. Hailey Tarbox had two unassisted goals, one in each half. Sophie Olivo had 10 saves.

The squad fell 4-0 to a talented Scarborough on Wednesday, Oct. 11, where students were decked out in red, white, and blue theme. Olivo had 12 saves.

They bounced back against Westbrook on Friday, Oct. 13, defeating the Blue Blazes 8-0. Five different players scored: Hailey Tarbox, Ailey Mann, and Kailyn Stuart all had two goals. Addie Fiandaca and Audrey Cote added one apiece. Olivo had 8 saves. 

The team hosts their final game of the regular season – and Senior Recognition Night – on Monday, Oct. 16 against Portland.

During Homecoming week, the Spartans hosted the Portland-Deering co-op on Tuesday, Oct. 10, where fans glowed in their neon attire. In the 5-0 victory, where Sanford outshot the opponent 33-3, Zoe McCann and Sadie Sevigny each had two goals, while Audrey Payeur added two assists. Emma Riche also scored one goal.

They had a quick turnaround game the following day, traveling to Cheverus on Wednesday, Oct. 11. They fell to the Stags 4-1. They wrapped up the week on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Scarborough, losing to the Red Storm 3-1.

Their final regular-season game will be at home on Wednesday, Oct. 17 (Senior Recognition Game) against Thornton Academy.

The Spartans hosted Bonny Eagle for their Homecoming Game on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. Sanford fans showed up in their red and white. The Spartans fell short, 56-7. Carter Buswell completed a 50-yard touchdown pass to Rylen Avery. 

“The football team would like to give a huge shout-out to the large student body that cheered us on, the Amazing Marching Band for creating some big-time noise and energy throughout the game, and our cheering squad for the positive support no matter the score!” said Coach Fallon. 

Spartans travel to Oxford Hills Friday night in the hopes of getting some key injured players back and getting our season headed back in a positive direction. 

During Homecoming week, the Spartans host Kennebunk on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Samone Gallagher had a season-high and career-high 20 kills in a match. She also added 4 assists, 2 digs, 2 blocks, and 2 service aces. Ellery Genest also had a season-high 22 assists. She also added 1 kill, 4 digs, and 4 service aces. Leah Soucy and Ashley Elias both had outstanding defensive performances. Elias led the team in digs with a total of 10, and Soucy was not far behind with 9 digs of her own.

Fans showed up in Tropical attire for their big game against Biddeford on Thursday, Oct. 12. The Spartans fell to last year’s State Champions 3-0.

The team plays in their final regular-season match on Monday Oct. 16 at Thornton Academy.

Sanford competed in the SMAA Second Seven Meet on Saturday, Oct. 14. Elijah Hill, Mason Van Gieson, Matthew Melvin, Shawnty Harris, Jack Van Gieson and Cynthia Carrol all finished off their regular season with Personal Records.

“It was an honor to host the SMAA second seven meet,” said Coach Smith. “It is a JV championship race when every team in the region sends their JV squads to compete. There were 67 girls and 109 boys competing. All of our athletes ran well and got PR’s on the day.”

They will compete in the Regional meet on Saturday, Oct. 21.
