SANFORD, Maine – For two weeks in December, the Sanford High School Class of 2026 is selling Candy Grams for the holiday season. This is the second year the class has taken over the fundraiser.
A Candy Gram is “A lovely little joyous note to send to a friend that has some candy with it,” according to Erin Murphy-Putnam, co-advisor of the class.
A Candy Gram comes in two forms, a candy cane and Hershey Kisses. For $1, students and staff can get one candy cane or three Hershey Kisses. Cash and Venmo are accepted.
The process after buying a Candy Gram includes filling out a piece of paper to write a note to the person you wish to receive the gram. After, notes are collected and paired with candy, separated into the spartan times, and delivered to homerooms.
Murphy-Putnam explained that when another program was stepping away from selling Candy Grams, they knew they could make some profit from it.
According to Murphy-Putnam, The profit from last year’s Candy Grams was around $150. Murphy-Putnam confirmed that the money will likely be used for a deposit on a prom venue.
Students and staff can purchase a Candy Gram during third block outside of the lunch room. You can either pay in cash or Venmo. Murphy-Putnam explained they are also looking at Cash App to be a possible way to buy Candy Grams in the future as well.
On Dec. 15, Candy Grams will no longer be available for purchase for the remainder of 2023.
Murphy-Putnam explains that they will most likely do Candy Grams again in the years to come.
