Wrestling’s Richie Simpsons and Basketball’s Ava Hudson named Spartan Athletes of the Week
Wrestling’s Richie Simpson and Basketball’s Ava Hudson have been named by The Spartan Times and Sanford Athletics as “Athletes of the Week” for their performances Feb. 5-10.
Simpson, a junior on the team, was the fourth seed in the 175 lb bracket at the Regional Tournament, but came out on top. He pinned his final opponent in less than 15 seconds to take first.
“Richie is such a great kid! He has worked nonstop for this success and has overcome injuries and illness as well!” said Coach Smith.
Hudson, a sophomore, stepped up this week in stats and performance. With a +/- of +32; Hudson’s offensive and defensive presence is felt by her teammates and opponents. She shot nearly 60% in effective field goals, 100% free throws, and finished the week with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
“Ava went above and beyond starring in her role for our team,” said Coach Kearson. “She brought her hard hat and lunch pail and came to work. She did all that we needed and more and it was a lot of fun to watch.”
