Two juniors recognized for art achievements

Student art will be displayed at the State Capitol this spring

Sanford juniors Elsie Gendron and Hannah Morgan were both recognized for their artistic achievements at the Scholastic Art Awards on Saturday, March 16. Their work was selected by a jury of professional artists to be displayed in the Cross Office building at the Capitol Complex, next to the Maine State House this spring.

Elsie Gendron was awarded two Scholastic Gold Key awards, one honorable mention, and a Maine Excellence in Art Education award. Her self-portrait will be put on display at the Capitol Complex in Augusta from March 20 – May 30.  

Hannah Morgan received one Scholastic Gold Key award, one honorable mention, a Maine Excellence in Art Education award, and a Congressional Art Award honorable mention. Morgan’s self-portrait will be on display at the Capitol Complex in Augusta from March 20 – May 30 as well. 

Both Gendron and Morgan’s gold key pieces are on display at MECA&D in Portland. 

Warner explained The Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency that supports the arts in Maine, has collaborated with MECA&D, the Scholastic Art & Literary Awards, and Maine’s two congressional offices to have access to the submissions for those competitions.
