Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: April 11-20

Spring Sports kicked off just before school vacation. We’ve got the varsity recaps over the last week and a half of contests.

Baseball

On Wednesday, April 17, Sanford fell 6-4 in an extra 8th inning to the reigning state champs South Portland despite out-hitting them nine to seven. Ben Gill, Tyler Sevigny, and Cayden Gendron each collected two hits for the Spartans. 

This week, the Spartans will take on Deering at Hadlock Field, Tuesday, April 4 at 4:30 p.m.

Boys Lacrosse

The Noble/Sanford Co-op opened their season on April 16 on the road at Massebisic and were victorious with a score of 20-2. Ayden Lockard scored 8 goals and tallied two assists. 

They played Portland on Thursday, April 18, defeating the Bull Dogs 16-9. Lockard scored 4 goals and added one assist.

On Friday, April 19 the co-op defeated Lake Region 21-1. Lockard scored 5 goals and three assists. 

This week, they play Falmouth on Monday, April 22, and host Wells on Friday, April 26 (at Noble).

Girls Lacrosse

The Spartans opened their season at home on Tuesday, April 11 against Traip Academy. Despite a second-half rally, the Spartans fell to the Rangers 5-4. Savannah Knight, Caiti Hanselmann, Mckenna Nanartowich and Ali Long scored in the loss.

Over break, they hosted Westbrook on Thursday, April 18, defeating the Blazes 10-6. Long led the Spartans with six goals. Luci Hartnett, Brielle Landry, Nanartowich and Hanselmann each added one.

The Spartans hosted Bonny Eagle on Saturday, April 20, defeating the Scots 13-1. Savannah Knight led with four goals, two assists, and a personal best nine draw controls. Nanartowich and Long added three goals a piece. Sadie Sevigny tallied one goal and two assists, with Hanselmann tacking on one goal as well.

The 2-1 Spartans travel to Bonny Eagle on Monday, April 22 (6 p.m.) and host Biddeford on Friday, April 26 (4:30 p.m.).

Softball

On Saturday, April 20, the Spartans fell to Kennebunk 10-0 in their home opener. Freshman Jenna Soucy pitched a full 7 inning game with 12 strikeouts and 4 walks. Although the Spartans loss, Coach Dumond states, “Everyone in the softball community is glad to see Sanford playing softball again!”

The Spartans will host Cheverus on Monday, April 22 at 4:30, then head on the road Wednesday, April 24 to compete against Marshwood at 4:00 followed by a home game against Bonny Eagle on Friday, April 26 at 4:00

Boys Tennis

The Spartans’ opening week for boys tennis includes four contests: their season opener is away against Marshwood on Monday, April 22 then it’s back on the road for the Spartans on Tuesday, April 23 where they’ll compete against Cheverus. Then they will host South Portland on Thursday, April 25 before ending the week away at Windham on Saturday, April 27.

Girls Tennis

It’s a busy opening week for Girls Tennis, who open their season at Marshwood on Monday, April 22. They travel to Cheverus on Tuesday, April 23, travel to South Portland on Thursday, Apil 25, and host Windham at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27.

Boys Track & Field

The Sanford Boys Track & Field team opens up their season on the road at Biddeford High School on Tuesday, April 23.

Girls Track & Field

The Sanford Girls Track & Field team opens up their season on the road at Biddeford High School on Tuesday, April 23.
