Spring Sports are on to week two of competing. We’ve got the recap over the last week of contests.

Baseball
On Tuesday, April 23 the Varsity Baseball team traveled to Deering where they ended with a strong score of 16-4. Ben Gill was able to collect five hits in five at-bats. Gill had two singles, one double, and hit an inside-the-park home run in the third inning. At the top of the first inning, Sanford got on the board with Gill, Scott Long and Scott Robitaille Jr each scoring one run. In the top of the third Tanner McCann drew a walk, also getting a run. Long, Cayden Gendron, Brady Boissonneault, and Tyler Sevigny each scored in the top of the fourth. Gill started on the mound for Sanford and in relief Brady Adams, Tyler Brennan, and Brody Baron each threw shutout innings for the Spartans. Overall ending a great game for Sanford.
Then on Thursday, April 25, the Spartans took on Biddeford at home with an exciting 8-7 walk-off victory. The Spartans first got on the board when Long singled, scoring one run. After a back-and-forth battle, Sanford was able to get back in front in the bottom of the sixth inning after Noah Corliss singled, and Beckett Barlow singled, each scoring one run. McCann started on the mound for the Spartans while Brennan made an appearance for relief. The Spartans ended the game in a thrilling fashion after an error made by the other team put Sanford on top.
It was back on the road for the Spartans on Saturday, April 27 where they went up against Scarborough. The Spartans sadly fell to the Red Storm after a low-scoring game of 3-0. Despite the loss, Gill had an exciting game with an overall of 18 outs.
This week the Spartans will face off against three different teams. The first is Tuesday, April 30 against Westbrook at home. Then Sanford travels to Windham on Thursday, May 2. And finally ending the week at home the Baseball team will go against Gorham on Saturday, May 4.
Boys Lacrosse
On Monday, April 22, the co-op Boys Lacrosse team fell to Falmouth with an end score of 17-4. Our sole Sanford scorer was Ayden Lockard, while AJ Anderson had an assist. Despite the loss, Anderson states, “The score was not the result we wanted but it was a good outlook for us to see where we compare to some of the top programs in the state.”
Next, the Spartans took on Wells at home (Noble) on Friday, April 26 where the Spartans put up a tough fight but ultimately lost with an end score of 11-6. Anderson had 1 goal and Lockard had 3.
This week Sanford will be on the road for Tuesday, April 30 against Biddeford, then on Thursday, May 2 they take on Traip Academy at home, and ending the week back at home the boys will face off against Traip Academy once again.
Girls Lacrosse
The Spartans traveled to Bonny Eagle on Monday, April 22, defeating the Scots 9-6. Ali Long scored 5 goals. Luci Hartnett had 2 goals and 2 assists. Savannah Knight had a goal and an assist, and Mckenna Nanartowich also scored.
They hosted Biddeford on Friday, April 26, but fell to the Tigers in a tough 7-5 loss. Long led the way with 3 goals, and Knight and Nanartowich each added one.
This week, the team travels to Traip Academy on Tuesday, April 30 and then to Deering on Saturday, May 4.
Softball
The varsity softball team had a busy week with two home games and one away. On Monday, April 22 the Spartans took on Cheverus at home where the girls took a tough loss 26-0. However, Coach Dumond says, “The players represent and respond well to adversity. They are very coachable and want to continue to learn and improve.”
Then the Spartans were on the road for Wednesday, April 24 where they fell to Marshwood 15-0.
On Friday, April 26, they went head-to-head against Bonny Eagle. Ending the week at home and with a final score of 20-1 the Spartans put up a tough fight but sadly took a loss.
The Spartans have another game-packed week coming up where they’ll face Noble on Monday, April 29 at Noble (4:00). Then it’s back home on Wednesday, May 1 where the girls will compete against Deering High School (3:30). And the varsity softball team will end their week on the road against Thornton Academy on Thursday, May 2 (4:30).
Boys Tennis
The Spartans opening week for boys tennis included four contests: their season opener was away on Monday, April 22 where after a tough fight they fell to Marshwood 2-3. Their points are from not one, but two exciting overtime matches. Landon Gosling won his single while Lamar Amoakohene and Finn Daly won in their doubles match.
On Tuesday, April 23 the boys went up against Cheverus, losing 3-2. They were back at home home to host South Portland on Thursday, April 25 where they took a tough loss 5-0.
At the end the week at Windham on Saturday, April 27, Sanford came away with a strong win of 3-1!
This week the guys will face off against Biddeford on Monday, April 29 at Sanford, then they’re home again on Wednesday, May 1 against Gorham, and end the week Against Thornton Academy on Thursday, May 2 at Thornton Academy.
Girls Tennis
It was a busy opening week for Girls Tennis, they started off on the road opening their season at Marshwood on Monday, April 22 where they won 3-2. Olivia Guinard won in singles, while Audrey Payeur and Ailey Mann took a win in doubles. Ava Gendron and Sophia Aiken also won their match with an exciting overtime finish.
On Tuesday, April 23, the girls were back on the road, this time heading to Cheverus. The girls put up a strong fight but sadly fell to Cheverus 5-1.
On Thursday, April 25, it was onto South Portland where the Spartans were victorious with a 5-0 win against the red riots!
And finally ending the week at home the girls hosted Windham on Saturday, April 27. Ending with a final score of 3-2 the Spartans were once again victorious.
This week the girls start off against Biddeford on Monday, April 29, then host Gorham on Wednesday, May 1, and end the week at home Thursday, May 2 against Thornton Academy.
Boys Track & Field
The Sanford Boys Track & Field team kicked off their season on the road at Biddeford High School where they collectively scored an outstanding 127 points, taking first place over Marshwood, Deering, and Biddeford. Multiple athletes in both running and field events were able to score.
Leading the Spartans in points was Carter Buswell, who placed first in both the 100 and 200-meter dash, and placed second in long jump. Captains Tucker Walker, Nick Farrington and Michael Cousineau were all able to secure first-place finishes in one or more of their events contributing greatly to their team score. Other first-place finishes include Craig Grant in high jump, Mason Van Gieson for pole vault, Arthur Bahuze in the 400-meter dash, and Matthew Melvin in race walk.
Second-place finishes consisted of Caleb Pelletier in the 1600-meter, Devonti Revers in the 400-meter, Bahuze in the 100-meter dash, and Logan Glidden for triple jump. Both the 4×100, 4×400, and 4×800 relay teams placed second as well.
Helping push the team further along in the meet placing third in their events was; Landon Gosling in javelin, Logan Glidden for long jump, and Cole Lizotte in the 110-meter hurdles.
The Spartans will make their next appearance at Massabesic Wednesday, May 1 against Gorham, Windham, and Massabesic.
Girls Track & Field
The Sanford Girls Track & Field team was also on the road for their season opener at Biddeford High School. The Spartans took a tough loss to Deering and Marshwood but rallied together in the field and long-distance events, beating Biddeford and scoring a collective 67 points.
The 4×8 team (Eliza Allen, Samone Gallagher, Addie Fiandaca, and Annalise Stimmell) took first early on in the meet. Other individual first-place finishes include Gallagher in the 1600-meter as well as Genevieve Jean-Paul in shot put and discus.
With a strong group of second-place finishes the Spartans had Georgia Whitman (Javelin), Kaylin Penley (Pole Vault), Emerson Whitlock (Race Walk), and Fiandaca to push the team further along in the meet.
Adding to their team score placing third was Tiffany Souliere in the 400-meter dash, Stimmell in the 800-meter run, Lily Peters in triple jump, and Abriella Parish for pole vault.
Also placing with in the top five to contribute points to their team score was Sophie Therrien (100-meter hurdles), Stimmell (1600-meter and 3200 meter), Gallagher (800-meter), Bella McCall (800-meter), and Peters (Long Jump)
Next the girls team will face off against Massabesic, Gorham, and Windham on Wednesday, May 1 at Massabesic.
