Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: April 29-May 4

We’ve got the recap over the last week of varsity contests

Baseball

After a rainy day and some rescheduling, the boys finally took to the field on Wednesday, May 1 at home against Westbrook, walking away with yet another win and an end score of 12-0. Beckett Barlow had a strong performance collecting three hits in four at bats. Barlow doubled in the second inning, singled in the first inning, and singled in the fourth inning, overall scoring twice. Also scoring was Scott Long, Tanner McCann, Ryan Alexander, Dom Veino, and Ben Gill. Zach Kassim was the one to earn the win for Sanford. The starting pitcher surrendered two hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out four and walking two. 

And to end the week Sanford took on Gorham at home Saturday, May 4. In this low-scoring game the Spartans came out on top 2-1. Ben Gill earned the win for the Spartans this game. Gill allowed four hits and one run over seven innings, striking out five and walking one. Ryan Alexander and Gill each collected one hit for Sanford. The Spartans were sure-handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Catcher Matthew Hebert had the most chances in the field with five. Overall ending a good week for Varsity Baseball.

The Spartans will go up against Portland next on Tuesday, May 7 at home. Then Cheverus on Thursday, May 9 at Cheverus. And end the week on the road against Noble on Friday, May 10.

Boys Lacrosse

On Tuesday, April 30 the Sanford/Noble Co-op team traveled to Biddeford where they came away with a huge 22-2 win against the Tigers. Captain AJ Anderson had 1 goal and 2 assists, while fellow Sanford teammate Ayden Lockhard had 5 goals and 3 assists. Anderson states his thoughts on the game saying “A good game to get us back into the win column.”

Next the Spartans took on Traip Academy at home on Thursday, May 2 where Sanford earned yet another win for their season with an end score of 17-3. Anderson also had 4 assis this game. Other Sanford players who contributed to the win was Lockard with 6 goals and 2 assists, as well as Tylor Pitman with 1 assist.

This week Sanford/Noble will be on the road against Thornton Academy on Tuesday, May 7.

Girls Lacrosse

The girls lacrosse team defeated Traip Academy 8-7 in an exciting overtime victory on April 30, having fallen to the Rangers earlier in the season. Sadie Sevigny scored two goals, one of which was the game-winner, and added one assist. Mckenna Nanartowich and Ali Long also added two goals each, and Lexi Hayward and Paige Sevigny added one apiece.

“The stats may not necessarily show it, but our middies and defense battled hard for us in that game,” said Coach Foley. “They were instrumental in winning those 50/50 balls and keeping us in it until our attack took care of business.” 

They traveled to Deering on Saturday, May 4, bulldozing the Rams 20-7. Ten different Spartans scored in the contest, led by Zoey McCann’s four goals. Paige Sevigny and Ali Long each had a hat-trick, while Sadie Sevigny added two goals and four assists.

Next week, the 5-2 Spartans host Thornton Academy on Friday, May 10 at 4:30.

Softball

Monday, April 29 Sanford traveled to Noble where they took a tough loss of 10-9 after a strong fight against the Knights

Then on Wednesday, May 1 the girls faced off against Deering on our home turf where they lost 15-0 to the rams. 

This week the Spartans will be very busy starting off with a game against Gorham on Monday, May 6 at home. Next Thornton Academy on Tuesday, May 7. Then it’s on the road for Sanford against Biddeford on Wednesday, May 8 and they end the week at home against Portland on Friday, May 10.

Boys Tennis

The boys started off their week at home against Biddeford on Monday, May 29 where after a tough fight they sadly fell to the Tigers 2-3.

The Spartans ended their week on the road as they traveled to Thornton Academy where their last match was sadly rained out and they lost to the Trojans 4-0.

This week the Spartans face off against Massabesic away on Tuesday, May 7 and end the week at home on Thursday, May 9 against Deering.

Girls Tennis

Sanford started off their week strong against Biddeford where they walked away with a huge 5-0 win over the Tigers. Olivia Guinard, Sydney Roux, and Sophia Tounge all won in their singles while Audrey Payeur and Audrey Cote as well as Ava Gendron and Aliey Mann

The girls ended their week at home hosting Thornton Academy where they took a tough loss of 3-1.

This week Sanford will host Massabesic on Tuesday, May 7 and end the week on the road at Deering on Thursday, May 9.

Boys Track & Field

Last week the Boys Track & Field team was on the road at Massabesic on Wednesday, May 1 against Gorham, Windham, and Massabesic. Overall as a team Sanford placed first with an impressive 102 points. Our first place winners include Captains Tucker Walker (shot) and Nick Farrington (Javelin). The Sanford Boys Track & Field team currently has the second fastest 4×400 team in the state with runners Arthur Bahuze (first leg), Gregg Waterman (second leg), Richie Simpson (third leg), and Devonti Revers (Anchor).

This week Sanford will travel to Falmouth on Tuesday, May 7 where they will compete against Noble, South Portland, and Falmouth.

Girls Track & Field

The Girls Track & Field team was also at Massabesic last week on Wednesday, May 1 where the girls competed against Gorham, Windham, and Massabesic. As a team the girls were able to place third overall and had a total of 56.5 points. Annalise Stimmell went undefeated in three different events, winning the 800 meter and the two mile individually. Stimmell was also part of the winning 4×800 team.

This week the Spartans will travel to Falmouth where they will compete against Noble, South Portland, and Falmouth on Tuesday, May 7.
