Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: April May 6-11

We’ve got the recap over the last week of varsity contests

Baseball

The boys started off their week by hosting Portland on Tuesday, May 7 where they were victorious with a 9-0 win. Tanner McCann was the one to earn the win for the Spartans. McCann gave up four hits and zero runs over four innings, striking out five and walking none. Noah Corliss and Dom Veino each came on in relief for Sanford and shut down Portland. On the offensive side Beckett Barlow, Ben Gill, and Cayden Gendron all singled, each scoring one run. Scott Robitaille Jr was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and once again Gill scored after tagging up. And Sanford’s Matthew Hebert, number nine hitter, led the team with three hits in three at-bats.

Next Sanford was on the road for Thursday, May 9 where they traveled to Cheverus and earned yet another win of 12-2. Gill earned the win for Sanford this time. The righty allowed four hits and two runs (zero earned) over six innings, striking out seven and walking two. In relief, Tyler Brennan tossed one inning of no-run ball for Sanford. The reliever surrendered one hit, striking out one and walking none. Cheverus was the first on the board early on in the game but Sanford flipped the game on its head in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs on three hits to take a 7-2 lead. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by McCann that drove in two.

Finally, the Spartans ended the week away at Noble on Friday, May 10 where they added another win to their season with an end score of 12-0. Winning pitcher Zach Kassim threw six innings, allowing three hits, striking out four, and walking four. Gill, Barlow, and Tyler Sevigny were all able to score more than once while Brady Adams, Gendron, Corliss, Hebert, and Brennan all added to the score with one run each. 

This week the Spartans will go against Kennebunk at home on Tuesday, May 14. Then host Thornton Academy on Thursday, May 16. And end the week on Saturday, May 18 at Falmouth. 

Boys Lacrosse

This week the Sanford/Noble Co-op team had one game against Thornton Academy on Tuesday, May 7 where they sadly fell to the Trojans 20-6. Despite the loss, Ayden Lockard was able to score half of team’s goals with 3, and AJ Anderson had 2 assists. Anderson states his thoughts on the loss, “Another good experience of playing a competitive program in the state.”

This week the Co-op team will face Cheverus on Tuesday, May 14 away, and end the week against Morse/Boothbay on Friday, May 17.

Girls Lacrosse

Despite only having one game this week, the girls lacrosse team had an exciting win against Thornton Academy 10-7 on home turf on Friday, May 10.

Mckenna Nanartowich and Savannah Knight each scored 4 goals, while sister duo Sadie and Paige Sevigny added one apiece as well. Goalie Payton Kimball made 10 saves in the net.

This week, the girls are on the road at Wells on Tuesday, May 14, then it’s another travel day for the Spartans as they head to Gorham on Thursday, May 16, then Sanford will end their week at home on Saturday, May 18 against South Portland for their “One Love” Dedication Game.

Softball

Last week the Spartans hosted Gorham on Monday, May 6 where they fell to the Rams 17-0. Next, they were away at Biddeford on Wednesday, May 8 where they sadly lost 25-1. The Spartans ended their week at home against Portland on Friday, May 10 where they lost 17-0.

This week the girls will be at Falmouth on Monday, May 13, then home against Westbrook on Wednesday, May 15, and end the week on the road at Massabesic on Friday, May 17.

Boys Tennis

The boys started off their week away at Massabesic on Tuesday, May 7 where they won 3-2. Zach Parison and Lucas Gendreau both won in their singles, while Lucas Barrow and Johnny Hunter won their double.

Next Sanford hosted Deering on Thursday, May 9, and were victorious 4-1. Landon Gosling, Lucas Gendreau, Lamar Amoakohene, and Finn Daly all one their singles. And Lucas Barrow and Jared Riley took a forfeit in doubles.

This week the Spartans will travel to Scarborough on Monday, May 13, and then it’s back on the road on Wednesday, May 15 at Kennebunk.

Girls Tennis

Last week, Sanford resumed a match against Thornton Academy postponed from rain and finished on Monday, May 6. The first doubles team of Ava Gendron and Ailey Mann was victorious.

They traveled to Deering on Thursday, May 9, defeating the Rams 5-0 as the second doubles was a forfeit.

Sanford hosted Gorham for a doubleheader on Friday, May 10. Olivia Guinard and Sydney Roux won first and second singles, respectively, but Sanford lost the day 2-3.

This week, they host Scarborough on Monday, May 13 and Kennebunk on Tuesday, May 14.

Boys Track & Field

The Boys Track & Field team traveled to Falmouth this previous week to compete against South Portland, Noble, and Falmouth. The boys were able to beat Noble and Falmouth but fell to South Portland.

Tucker Walker placed first in shot and discus. Walker also placed in javelin with a personal best throw, while his discus throw was one of the top in the state so far. Nick Farrington also put up an impressive performance placing second in javelin and is currently second best in the state. In other exciting news, the 4×4 team crushed it with a win against all three teams and has the 2nd fastest state time (also improved their time and was faster than the previous meets time). Landon Gosling also came away with a win in the pole vault.

This week the boys host Bonny Eagle, Cheverus, and Kennebunk on Tuesday, May 14 for their Senior Night.

Girls Track & Field

The Girls Track & Field team was also on the road at Falmouth competing against South Portland, Noble, and the hostess Falmouth. Sanford fell to all teams and had an end score of 32.5. However, the 4×800 team has continued to run undefeated this year and put together another strong performance.

Genevieve JeanPaul and Georgia Whitman have proven to be consistent scorers in the throws. Jean-Paul placed second in shot and fourth in discus, while Whitman placed third in javelin. For track events, Annalise Stimmell placed first in the 800 meters against some tough competitors. 

This week the girls will host Bonny Eagle, Cheverus, and Kennebunk on Tuesday, May 14 for their Senior Night.
