Spartans Varsity Sports Recap: May 20-25

We’ve got the recap over the last week of varsity contests

Baseball

On Wednesday, May 22 the Varsity Baseball team traveled to Massabesic where after some rescheduling due to a rain delay and a tough fight the boys sadly fell to the Mustangs 2-0. Tanner McCann took the loss for Sanford this game. The starting pitcher surrendered six hits and two runs over six innings, striking out seven and walking three. Ben Gill and Tyler Sevigny were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected one hit for the Spartans.

Next the boys hosted Marshwood on Thursday, May 23 for their final home game and senior recognition night. Sanford fell to the Hawks 2-1, as Gill took the loss for Sanford. Gill struck out 11 batters over the 7 innings. The starting pitcher also surrendered five hits and two runs while walking one. McCann led the team with two hits in three at-bats. Gill went 1-for-2 at the plate as the number three hitter led the team with one run batted in.

And ending the week on the road Sanford went up against Bonny Eagle on Saturday, May 25 where Sanford took the win 2-1. NoahCorliss started the game for Sanford, the young pitcher surrendered three hits and one run over four innings, striking out one and walking three. Brady Adams threw three innings in relief, they surrendered one hit, striking out two and walking two. Adams went 1-for-1 at the plate as the pitcher led the team with one run batted in. Scott Robitaille Jr went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Sanford in hits.

Their post-season plans are to be determined.

Boys Lacrosse

The Sanford/Noble Boys Lacrosse Co-op team started off their week at home against Bonny Eagle on Tuesday, May 21. The team took a tough loss as they fell 7-6 after some unexpected weather that caused the game to stop on Tuesday and resume Wednesday in the third quarter due to thunderstorms. Sanford player Ayden Lockard scored 2 goals for Sanford/Noble. 

Then the boys took on South Portland at home (Noble) for their senior night on Friday, May 24. It was a back and forth game but Sanford came up short and lost 16-14. AydenLockard had 7 goals and 1 assist while captain AJ Anderson and fellow Sanford player Simon Lanigan each had 1 assist. Anderson states that the game was a “Hard-fought and close game against a 2023 state finalist program.”

Their post-season plans are to be determined.

Girls Lacrosse

The Varsity Girls Lacrosse team started off their week on the road at top-ranked Windham on Wednesday, May 22, where the girls fell 18-3. Ali Long, Caitlin Hanselmann and Savannah Knight were the goal scorers for Sanford in this game. Despite the score, Coach Foley said she’s proud of how the girls battled from start to finish.

Next, the Spartans hosted South Portland for the second time this season on Saturday, May 25 for their Senior Recognition Game. Having fallen to the Red Riots the previous week, the team was eager and excited to snag the 10-7 victory.
Ali Long and Savannah Knight paced the Spartans with three goals each. Caiti Hanselmann tallied two goals and Mackenna Nanartowich and Zoey McCann also added to the score.

Their first-round playoff game will likely be on the road on Tuesday, June 4, opponent to be determined.

Softball

The Varsity Softball team had a hard loss 17-0 on Wednesday, May 22 to Windham, then fell 15-0 to South Portland on Friday, May 24.

Boys Tennis

On Tuesday, May 21 the boys had their last regular season meet against Bonny Eagle where they tied the Scots 2-2.

They will be making an appearance in the postseason (details to be determined).

Girls Tennis

The Girls Tennis team ended their regular season on the road at Bonny Eagle where they defeated the Scots 3-2. Olivia Guinard and Sydney Roux won first and second singles, respectively, while Ailey Mann and Ava Gendron won second doubles.

They will be hosting a playoff match in the postseason – details to be determined.

Track & Field

The Boys Track & Field team competed at the SMAA Regionals meet this past Friday, May 24. This was an incredibly tough meet with all of the best athletes around competing. Our outstanding placers for Sanford this meet include; Arthur Bahuze, Devonti Revers, Craig Grant, Jack Van Gieson, and Mason Van Gieson. For first place, we have Tucker Walker in discus and shot put as well as Nick Farrington in Javelin, Farrington also placed 3rd for discus.  

On the girls side, the team rallied together and showed incredible spirit and support for their teammates. The girls team sole placers being Genevieve Jean-Paul for shot put.

The State Championship is this Saturday, June 1 at Thornton Academy.
