SRTC’s Building Trades and multiple coaches donate time and money for a new high school shot-put pit

SANFORD, Maine – The Sanford Track & Field team recently received a new shot-put pit, thanks to the support of the Sanford Regional Technical Center (SRTC) and multiple coaches.
By coming together, the coaches raised money/donated their own money. And some of the SRTC classes helped with the manual labor of setting it up; both parties volunteering their time to make it happen.
“This project allowed my students the opportunity to use their math and transit skills to find the angels and layout the perimeter of the shot put area,” said Troy Hathaway, Building Trades Instructor. “They also learned how to do half-lap joinery on the timbers we used to tie them all together.”

With the help of SRTC, this new addition not only shows the coaches’ commitment to the sport, but also their desire to improve facilities for future athletes.
“There is a lot of talent on this team and I want to see them grow and perform at the high level I know they can, said Coach Walker. “Their success will not be limited by not having the right equipment or facilities to do that.”
Coach Walker and Coach Rowe have also donated many other throwing implements, including competition javelins/disc/shot-puts and measuring tools.
When we look at the higher-performing throwers on the team, the number one pick is Indoor Track and Field Shot-put state champion and Outdoor Track and field discus State Champion Tucker Walker.
“I’m very grateful to have coaches who care about us enough to improve our facilities,” said Tucker, “which, overall, makes me a better thrower and allows me to feel what it is like to perform at those big meets.”
Tucker will be attending Division 2 Assumption University in Massachusetts.
As you can see the donation of the shot put pit by two coaches and SRTC students has brought together many track athletes to perform better in their meets and created a long-lasting impact on the Sanford Track & Field Program
