Varsity Sports Recap: Oct. 7-12

See how our varsity teams fared in their contests during Homecoming week.

The Spartans traveled to Massabesic to race against Marshwood, Noble, and Massabesic on Friday, Oct. 11. Top performers from the race on the boy’s side were Caleb Pelletier and Gabriel Waterman.  From the female side top performer was Sophie Therrien.

Next up for the Spartans they host 2nd sevens on Saturday (Oct. 19).

On Wednesday (Oct. 9) Sanford’s boys soccer team hosted South Portland and lost 5-0. 

On Friday (Oct. 11) they traveled to Massabesic and won 5-1. Some notable performances were Gavin Hebler with 2 goals, Levi Mann with 1 goal, Kane Tierney with 1 goal, and Antowayne Chisholm with 1 goal.

The next games are Tuesday (Oct. 15) at Biddeford at 6 p.m. and Friday (Oct. 18) In Sanford against Falmouth at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 8, The Spartans girl’s soccer team improved to  5-3-1 with a win over Bonny Eagle on homecoming night in front of a loud enthusiastic crowd.

Bella McCall scored the go-ahead goal in the second half on an assist from Annalise Stimmell. Sanford took a 1-0 halftime lead in the first half on a goal by Stimmell (1 goal, 1 assist) assisted by Mollie Puffer. Puffer (1 goal, 1 assist) added a goal for Sanford with 13 minutes remaining to take a 3-1 lead.

Savannah Knight and Kya Duprey led the strong defensive effort. Sophie Olivo played great in goal for the Spartans.

On Thursday, Oct. 10, the Spartans hosted the Biddeford Tigers on our own home turf. Ava Hudson led the Spartan attack with a goal and 2 assists. Brielle Landry, Cassidy Hickey, and Kailyn Stuart each added goals for the Spartans. Sophie Olivo earned another shutout in goal. They won the game overall 4-0. 

Next up for the Spartans on Monday (Oct. 14), the Spartans travel to Gorham for a game against the Rams. Then on Thursday (Oct. 17), they travel to South Portland.

On Monday (Oct. 7th) the Spartans hosted Kennebunk for their Homecoming game. Sanford had a strong lead at the end of the first half with a score of 2-0 and finished off with a strong win of 3-0. Goals were scored by Audrey Payeur, Elle Davis, and Ali Long. With assistance from Hailey Payeur, Audrey Payeur, and Zoey MaCann. With overall 24 shots on goal. 

On Saturday (Oct. 12) the Spartans went on the road to Waterhouse Field to challenge the Biddeford Tigers. Audrey Payeur and Zoey McCann each had 1 goal, while Megan Sheppard had 15 saves throughout the game. 

Coaches Quote from the Biddeford game : ”The Spartans struggled early to respond to the speed of Biddeford’s attack. However, we settled in as the game wore on, and scored two goals to Biddeford’s one in the second half. While we didn’t get the result we were looking for, it’s good to be challenged the way we were. completing at that level is is going to be an important part of our post-season success.”

Next, they travel to Windham on Monday (Oct. 14), and then on Wednesday (Oct. 16), they Host Scarbrough for senior night. Lastly on Saturday (Oct. 18) the Spartans host Falmouth.

On Friday (Oct. 11) Sanford’s football team hosted Dover and lost 13-20. Some notable performances are Rhylen Avery with 206 rushing yards and 1 touchdown, and Jayden Franco with 28 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.

Sanford’s next game is on Friday (Oct. 18) at Bonny Eagle at 7 p.m.

On Monday (Oct. 7),  which is the Boys qualifier meet at Natanis on Monday, Oct. 7. Carter Giroux was the top performer for the team. To qualify the athletes needed to score a 90 or better, the qualifiers include Luke Gendron (99), Noah Corliss (106), Max Lapointe (107), Brayden Baron (111), and Brody Baron (122). As Carter Giroux had the best performance, but missed qualifying by 2 strokes. 

On Tuesday (Oct. 8) Sanford’s volleyball team traveled to Deering and lost 0-3. On Thursday (Oct. 11) they hosted South Portland and lost 2-3. A noteworthy performance was Samone Gallagher in the game against Deering, with 13 kills and 12 digs.

Upcoming games are on Tuesday (Oct. 15) in Sanford against Bonny Eagle at 6 p.m. and Thursday (Oct. 17) in Sanford against Scarborough at 7 p.m.
