Varsity Sports Recap: Dec 6-14

Spartan Winter Sports off to a strong start for the 24-25 season

Boys Basketball

On Friday, Dec. 6, the varsity boys basketball team traveled to Thornton Academy, defeating the Trojans 76-71. Brady Adams led the Spartans with 25 points, followed by Dylan Gendron and Ryan Alexander who added 16 each, followed by freshman Luke Gendron with 11.

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, the Spartans held their home opener against Edward Little where they won 75-66. Some notable performances were Adams leading the team in points with 17, Alexander with 12 points all from beyond the 3 point line, and Dylan Gendron and Luke Gendron both added 13 points apiece.

“This was another great win for us. We have been put in situations where we’ve had to learn on the fly and execute at a high level to win some games. I’m proud of the way we compete and work together to find ways to win,” Head Coach Jake Mills stated.

They will travel to Bonny Eagle on Thursday Dec. 19 and play at 7 p.m., then on Friday Dec. 20 they will host South Portland at 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball

The varsity girls basketball team held their home opener on Friday, Dec. 6 against Thornton Academy, defeating the Trojans 64-28. Freshman Mollie Puffer led the team with 20 points. Paige Sevigny posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Ava Hudson added 14 points.

They traveled to Edward Little on Tuesday, Dec. 10. and lost 54-49 in overtime. Notable performances include Sevigny with 15 points, Hudson and Puffer both scored 13 points.

On Thursday Dec. 12 they hosted York and won 61-41. Notable performances included the trio again: Hudson leading in scoring with 18 points and 9 rebounds, Puffer added 15 points and Sevigny put up 12.

For their next game they will travel to South Portland on Friday Dec. 20, and will play at 7 p.m.

The Indoor Track & Field team will be traveling to USM Sat. December 21 to take on Biddeford, Kennebunk, Massabesic, and Portland with a starting time at 12:00 p.m.

Wrestling

For the third year in a row, the Sanford Wrestling team swept the Sullivan Duals. Scores from Saturday, Dec. 7 include:

66-16 over Deering

56-24 over Fryburg

58-24 over York

49-26 over Wolfpack

With Gabe Williams and Quang Lam being noticed for their performances throughout the meet. The captains Isaiah Phillips, James Chaplick and Canton Hill all went 4-0 for the day. 

The Spartans traveled to Windham for their first dual meet of the season on Wednesday, Dec. 12 against the Wolfpack (Windham, Grey, New Gloucester). Sanford handedly defeated Scarborough-Gorham (80-0) but fell to the Wolfpack in a tough 39-38 loss. Key performances came from Connor Pickering and Isaiah Phillips throughout the night. 

The next meet is Wednesday Dec. 18 against Noble and Bonny Eagle for the Spartans’ home opener.
