Spartans battled it out over winter break

Boys Basketball

On Thursday, Dec. 19, Sanford fell to Bonny Eagle in overtime 72-65. Sanford was paced by Brady Adams with 19 points, Dylan Gendron with 17 and Luke Gendron with 12.

On Friday, Dec. 20, the Spartans had a tough loss to South Portland 63-46. Brady Adams led with 20 points (5 three pointers) and Dylan Gendron had 11.

They bounced back for a victory on Monday, Dec. 23 against Oxford Hills, winning 74-50. Dylan Gendron scored 30 points, including six 3-pointers. Luke Gendron added 15 points and Ryan Alexander had nine.

They faced a tough loss against Scarborough 48-42 on Friday, Dec. 27. Dylan Gendron led with 12 points, Bryce Adams added 11 and Luke Gendron added 10.

In the final game of break, the Spartans fell to a talented Portland 63-54 on Monday, Dec. 30. Dylan Gendron and Luke Gendron each had 13 points and Alexander added 10.

On Thursday, Jan. 2 the Spartans traveled to Biddeford, taking the victory 66-63. Top performers were Brady Adams with 22, Dylan Gendron with 15, and Luke Gendron had 12.

The Spartans travel to Greely this Saturday, Jan. 4, play Deering on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and TA Thursday, Jan. 9.

Girls Basketball

On Friday, Dec. 20, the Spartans fell to South Portland 56-44. Mollie Puffer scored 15 points and Ava Hudson finished with 10 for the Spartans.

They faced a tough loss against a talented Oxford Hills team, 48-34, on Monday, Dec. 23. Puffer had 17 points for Sanford.

They bounced back with an exciting win on Friday, Dec. 27 against Scarborough, defeating the Red Storm 54-54. Hudson paced a balanced offense with 13 points, Paige Sevigny and Annalise Stimmell each scored 10 points and Puffer had nine. Sanford led 43-31 entering the fourth quarter and withstood a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the Red Storm.

They gained another victory on Monday, Dec. 30 against Portland, beating the Bulldogs 54-41. Puffer scored a dominating and career-high 28 points. Paige Sevigny added 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

On Thursday, Jan. 2, the Spartans faced Biddeford, defeating the Tigers 55-44. Mollie Puffer led with 21 and Ava Hudson added 14.

The Spartans opened up their season on Saturday, Dec. 21 at USM to take on Biddeford, Kennebunk, Massabesic and Portland. Meet highlights for Sanford include:

  • Senior Boys 400m Dash Final: Caleb Pelletier, 3rd
  • Open Boys 600m Run Final: Isaac Pelletier 1st, Alex Lemay 4th
  • Open Boys 4x800m Relay Finals: First
  • JV Boys Long Jump: Dezmond Donegan, 4th
  • Senior Boys Long Jump: Logan Glidden 3rd, Rhylen Avery 5th
  • Senior Boys Triple Jump: Logan Glidden 1st, Logan Legere 4th
  • Open Boys Pole Vault: Isaac Pelletier, 1st
  • JV Shot Put Finals: Ethan Davie 1st, Marcus Harriman 4th

On Thursday January 9 they go against Deering, Massabesic, Scarborough and Westbrook. Then on Saturday January 11 they play Cheverus, Falmouth, Kennebunk and Westbrook

  • JV Girls 200m Dash Finals, Mattea Peters, 3rd
  • Open Girls 600m Run: Bella McCall, 3rd
  • JV Girls 800m Run: Eliza Allen, 2nd
  • Senior Girls 800m Run: Bella McCall, 1st
  • JV Girls Long Jump Finals: Lily Peters, 3rd
  • JV Girls Triple Jump Finals: Lily Peters 1st, Ava Corliss 3rd
  • JV Girls Shot Put Finals: Kylie Spaulding, 4th
  • Senior Girls Shot Put Finals: Georgia Whitman 1st, Ryenn Bajer 3rd, Elizabeth Cahoon 4th

Next week on Thursday January 9 they will face Deering, Massabesic, Scarborough and Westbrook. Then on Saturday, Jan. 11 they play Cheverus, Falmouth, Kennebunk and Westbrook.

Wrestling

On Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Spartans opened up at home against Noble and Bonny Eagle. They defeated Bonny Eagle but fell to Noble. On Saturday, Dec. 21 they traveled to Londonderry, where the team placed second. There were four champions (3 coed 1 female) and 11 overall wrestlers placed.

They competed in the Noble Invitational on Friday, Dec. 27 and 28. Canton Hill (215) placed first, James Chaplick (144) placed fifth, Kylee Hunt (144) placed third (girls bracket) and Cassidy Kenyon (185)  placed third (girls bracket).

Congratulations to Canton Hill, who notched his 100th pin against York & Massabesic.

This weekend (Jan. 3-4) is the Sanford Wrestling Annual Tournament (SWAT) – taking place in both gymnasiums all weekend.

Next week the team faces Marshwood & Biddeford/TA on Wednesday, Jan. 8 and wrestles Cheverus and Bonny Eagle on Saturday, Jan. 11.
