SANFORD, Maine – Super Bowl LIX is Sunday, Feb. 9 featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs aim to achieve what no other team – not even the New Patriots/TB12 dynasty – has done: winning the Super Bowl three years in row. We surveyed more than 100 students who weighed in on what they look forward to for the big game.
Watching the Super Bowl is popular at Sanford High School; however, Sanford viewers also highly anticipate the halftime show. Fifty percent plan to watch the Super Bowl, another 25% plan to have it on in the background and 58% will watch the halftime show.
On the other hand, 21% don’t plan on watching the Super Bowl at all. Additionally, 30% are looking to see the Super Bowl commercials and 21% are watching for celebrities.
A large majority of Sanford students predict the Kansas City Chiefs will win with 78.3% believing so and 21.7% predicting the Philadelphia Eagles. Despite many Sanford students believing the Chiefs will win, less than half want them to win with 38.6% feeling this way. On the other hand, 61.4% want the Eagles to win.
The Teams
The Chiefs have been very good in close games, winning all but one of them this season, but they struggle with staying consistent offensively, having multiple down games when it came to passing.
The Eagles have the best defense in the league and they have an amazing run game with Saquon Barkley, but their passing is inconsistent.
The Eagles have a better overall roster, but the Chiefs have the best quarterback in the league, Patrick Mahomes, who can win just about any game.
Past Winners
In the past 5 years, the Chiefs have won 3 of the Super Bowls, one in 2020, one in 2023, and one in 2024. In 2020 they were down 10 against the San Francisco 49ers but came back due to the defense stepping up and the offense playing very well. In 2023 they were down by 10 to the Eagles, and once again came back due to the offense and defense playing very well in the second half, and the same thing happened once again in 2024 against the 49ers. Safe to say the Chiefs play their best when they go down on the scoreboard.
The Buccaneers have won one in 2021, they won due to their amazing defense that the Chiefs offensive line could not stop, resulting in Mahomes being hit a lot
The Rams won once in 2022, they played great defense against the Cincinnati Bengals and their qb Matthew Stafford led a game winning drive that ended with a touchdown caught by receiver Cooper Kupp
Half Time Show
On Sunday, Feb. 9, Kendrick Lamar will perform at the Superbowl LIX Halftime Show. Additionally, it has been revealed that SZA will also be performing as a special guest.
Songs the duo have published together include “All the Stars,” “Luther” and “Gloria.” As of 2024, Lamar had 17 Grammy wins which on Feb. 3, extended to 22 at the 2025 Grammys.
Sanford students most popularly reported wanting to hear “All the Stars” and “Not Like Us.”
This will be Lamar’s second Superbowl performance as he previously took the stage in 2022 with Eminem, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige and Snoop Dogg.
