Varsity Sports Recap: Feb. 1-8

Cheer

On Saturday, Feb. 1 the team traveled to Bangor for Regionals where they placed fifth.

They traveled to the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 8 and placed tenth overall.

Boys Basketball

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, the Spartans traveled to Gorham and lost 62-55. Top performances were from Brady Adams with 14 points, Luke Gendron with 13 points, Dylan Gendron with 11 points and Bryce Adams with 10 points.

On Friday, Feb. 7, they hosted Massabesic and won 75-34. Top performers were Brady Adams with 19 points, Chase Cousens with 10 points and Josh Callahan with 10 points.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, they have their first playoff game at Bonny Eagle at 7 p.m.

Girls Basketball

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, The Spartans hosted Gorham, falling to the second-ranked Rams 47-33. Top performances were from Mollie Puffer with 11 points and Paige Sevigny with 10 points.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, they traveled to Massabesic and won 48-26. Top performances were from Puffer who had 20 points and 18 rebounds. Ava Hudson added 14 points and 13 rebounds and Sevigny had 13 rebounds.

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, they will play their first playoff game at home against Massabesic at 6 p.m. in the Partners Bank Gymnasium.

The boys competed at USM against Kennebunk, Marshwood, Massabessic and Noble on Saturday, Feb. 1. This was their last regular season meet.

  • Triple Jump- Dezmend Donegan, 2nd
  • Shot Put- Ethan Davie, 2nd, Marcus Harriman, 3rd
  • 4x400m- Caleb Pelletier, Elijah Laurendeau, Logan Gildden and Isaac Pelletier, 2nd
  • 600m- Alex Lemay, 3rd
  • 3200m- Michael Mastraccio, 3rd
  • Long Jump- Isaac Pelletier, 3rd
  • 4x200m- Logan Gosling, Dezmend Donegan, Tyson Kimball and Lukas Maclean 3rd

The team qualifiers also competed on Feb. 8 for the Southwestern meet at USM in Gorham. Top performances from this meet include:

  • High Jump- Isaac Pelletier, 3rd
  • 800m run- Isaac Pelletier, 4th
  • Triple Jump- Logan Glidden, 4th
  • Long Jump- Logan Glidden, 7th
  • Shot Put- Ethan Davie, 8th

The girls The girls competed at USM against Kennebunk, Marshwood, Massabessic and Noble on Saturday, Feb. 1. This was their last regular season meet. Some highlights from this meet include:

  • 200m- Mattea Peters, 1st
  • 400m- Mattea Peters, 1st
  • 800m- Eliza Allen, 2nd (JR), Bella McCall, 2nd (SR)
  • Long Jump- Lily Peters, 3rd
  • Triple Jump- Lily Peters, 2nd, Ashtyn Gagnon, 3rd
  • Shotput- Ryenn Baker, 1st, Georgia Whitman, 2nd, Kylie Spaulding, 3rd
  • 4x400m- Lily Peters, Eliza Allen, Bella McCall and Mattea Peters, 2nd
  • 4x800m- Eliza Allen, Tiffany Souliere, Genevieve Deshambault and Bella McCall, 2nd

The team Southwestern’s qualifiers also competed on Feb. 8 at USM in Gorham. The top performances from this meet include:

  • 400m- Mattea Peters, 1st
  • 800m- Bella McCall, 5th
  • Shotput- Georgia Whitman, 8th
  • Sprint Medley- Lily Peters, Tiffany Souliere, Mattea Peters and Bella McCall, 6th

The team will return to USM for the state meet on Monday, Feb. 17.

Wrestling

Wrestling hosted the states meet on Feb. 1. for teams across Maine. Sanford fell to Oxford Hills with a tough loss in the quarter-finals by one point. 

As a team, Sanford placed third at Regionals wrestlers for the Class A Championships on Saturday, Feb. 8. The senior captains put on an outstanding show. Richie Simpson (190 lbs) and Isaiah Phillips (126 lbs) were Class A South Regional Champions. James Chaplick (144 lbs) and Canton Hill (215) placed second. Simpson earned his 100th win, while Hill earned his 150th win.

Additional top performances include:

  • 120 lbs- Jack Van Gieson, 2nd
  • 138 lbs- Gabe Roberge, 5th
  • 175 lbs- Ricky Callis, 2nd
  • 285 lbs- Alden Treadwell, 3rd

These eight wrestlers will head to the Class A Championships, which will be held Saturday, Feb. 15 in Lewiston.
