SHS Staff Couples: What’s it like working together?

On the tail of Valentine’s Day, we asked five teacher couples at SHS what it is like to work with their spouse.

Sanford High School Has more than five married couples working in the building. We thought it’d be fun to take a dive into what it’s like working in close proximity to their spouses: How long have you worked together? How did you meet? Do you drive to school together or drive each other nuts?

Michael and Gayle Fallon have been working together for 22 years. Michael is the Assistant Principal for grades 9 and 10, while Gayle is a School Social Worker.

According to the Fallons, they were set up by a former colleague at the high school. Despite being across the hall from each other, they hardly see each other during the school day, but both agree that it’s nice to see each other when there’s time. They do carpool whenever they find the time.

Mark and Stephanie Boissonneault have been working together for 17 or 18 years. Mark is a teacher in the Math Department and Stephanie works in Special Education.

They take separate cars to work as Stephanie has to be at work earlier than Mark. However, Mark mentions seeing his wife at work is “one of the most enjoyable parts of his day…eating lunch with her makes everyday special.”

Both Mr. and Mrs. Boissonneault recalled the same funny story from work: Once, a cupcake with was left on Mark’s desk with a note reading, “Hope you have a great day, love me”. Mark asked if it was Steph — she was not happy!!

Carrie and Troy Hathaway have been working together for six years. Troy is the SRTC instructor for Building Trades (and has been working here for 26 years!), while Carrie works as the Attendance Secretary.

Carrie had previously worked at two other elementary schools but then got sent here when Margret Chase Smith school closed to be renovated, she decided to stay.

Mutual friend and colleague Deanna Farrell introduced Troy and Carrie. Carrie joked that it’s very convenient [working with Troy] for when you need to tell him something or need money.

Zachary and Valerie Lemelin have been working together at SHS for three years now. Zach first began teaching in the district, but then became the Athletic Director, while Valerie is the Special Education Social Worker. The Boissonneaults helped introduce the couple.

According to the Lemelins, they love seeing each other during the day, even if it is brief.

“It is amazing! To get to see her during the school day even for a few brief minutes can really make the day that much more positive!” said Zach.

The pair do not carpool as their schedules are too busy. “All that gas money!” said Valerie.

This is Shaun and Lee Rowe‘s first year working together at SHS. They both work as Ed. Techs; Lee just started working here this school year, while Shaun was working here for years before. However, Lee isn’t new to the district, as she worked at Carl J. Lamb School beforehand.

“I’ve always wanted to work for Sanford High School,” said Lee, “so when an opportunity came at the high school there was no question in my mind but to take it. Working with my husband made our relationship better for us.”

The pair always carpool together, although Shaun complains about Lee’s driving.

Authors’ Note: We reached out to Mr. and Mrs. Bushnell, but they had sick kids and didn’t have time to complete the survey!
