SANFORD, Maine – Sanford High School’s National Art Honor Society students began painting a mural at Margaret Chase Smith School on Sunday, March 23. SHS senior Daviney Sar designed the mural.
“I wanted it to be cute and playful so I replicated the original design of the coyote mascot and kept things more cartoony,” said Sar.
The painting includes the MCS mascot, a coyote, the school motto, “I am smart. I am unique. I am loved. I am brave. I can make mistakes. I can learn. I am a coyote,” and a nature-themed background, as per the request of the school.

So far they’ve only done one day of work, but they plan on doing three hours or more for each session.
They’ve been working on the mural on Sundays so far but plan on doing as much as they can when members are available.
“The most exciting part so far is definitely knowing that my design will be in the elementary school and painting with my friends in NAHS,” said Sar. “It’s really cool being in charge of the design, I’ve never done a mural before.
Currently, there is not a specific date that it will be done as paint sessions will happen when students are available.
The National Art Honor Society is open to students who “attain the highest standards in art scholarship, character, and service,” said the National Art Education Association.
