SANFORD, Maine – The Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association (M.I.A.A) has recognized Zachary Lemelin, Sanford’s Athletic Director, with the Past President’s Rising Star Award.

This award recognizes administrators who are making a big impact on athletes while still being early on in their careers. Specifically, the award is given to athletic directors with five years or less of experience.

Becky Cleveland, Sanford Athletics’ Administrative Assistant, said, “In his short tenure as an athletic director, he has not shied away from supporting the SMAA League and the Maine Principals Association in hosting many league/State athletic events.”

The recipients of this award are typically chosen for their commitment to professional development. A great example of Lemelin’s commitment is shown by his role as Cheer liaison. This means he communicates with the other teams and facilitates events.

Nominees are chosen for their dedication to athletics in their school, league, and state.

Principal Tracy Gibson shared:

“I’m incredibly proud of Mr. Lemelin for receiving the prestigious Past President Rising Star Award. Since becoming our Athletic Director in 2022, he has transformed both our athletic programs and school culture through his leadership. His Student Leadership Council has empowered our students, while his organizational talents have strengthened our community connections, particularly through the Sanford Athletics Hall of Honor Induction. What truly sets him apart is his unwavering dedication to our student athletes. His positive influence on our school in such a short time is remarkable, and we’re fortunate to have him leading our athletic department.”

Congratulations to Mr. Lemelin!
