Spring Varsity Sports Recap: April 17-26

Spring Sports off to a hot start

BASEBALL

The baseball team started off their season with a 2-1 win on the road in Gorham on April 25. A notable performance came from Brady Boissoneault who had two RBI’s. This is a very impressive win because Gorham’s pitcher is committed to a D1 college and had professional level scouts watching.

GIRLS LACROSSE

The Varsity Girls Lacrosse team opened up their season on the road against Bonny Eagle on April 17, claiming an exciting 7-6 victory. Mckenna Nanartowich scored three goals, including the game winner in the last 17 seconds to lift the Spartans over the Scots. Ali Long scored twice and Sadie Sevigny and Savannah Knight added one goal each.

On Tuesday, April 22, they faced a tough 11-10 loss to Traip Academy despite a second half push. Long tallied for goals and an assist, Knight added three goals, and Nanartowich, Sevigny, and Kya Duprey tallied one goal apiece.

They bounced back on Thursday, April 24, by defeating Westbrook 10-4. Knight paced the Spartans with three goals, five ground balls, and four forced turnovers. Nanartowich and Long tallied two goals each, Paige Sevigny added a goal and an assist, and Zoey McCann tacked on an assist and five ground balls. Defensively, Duprey caused four turnovers, picked up four ground balls, and snagged four draw controls.

This week, the Spartans host Bonny Eagle on Tuesday, April 29 and travel to Biddeford on Thursday, May 1.

BOYS TENNIS

The boys’ tennis team competed against South Portland on April 29 at South Portland. The team lost 5-0, narrowly missing in overtime, but scored their first set win of the season by Brody Hartman and Daunte Cote.

The team will travel to South Portland for their tennis match on Tuesday, April 29, and host Windham on Thursday, May 1.

The girls’ tennis team competed against Gorham on Tuesday, April 17, at Gorham High School. The Spartans fell to the Rams 1-4, with Lily Gillis and Hailey Payeur picking up a win.

Assistant Varsity Coach Ryan Geary had this to say about the match, “For a less experienced line than last year, they did really well, and it is still early. Don’t count the Spartans out until the last point is over.”

The girls’ tennis team will host South Portland for their tennis match on Tuesday, April 29, and travel to Windham on Thursday, May 1.

The boys’ track and field team competed at Gorham High School on April 18 against Westbrook, Gorham and South Portland. The team placed third overall and had athletes place in multiple events. The highlights from this meet include: 

  • 100m- Rhylen Avery, 1st
  • 800m- Isaac Pelletier, 3rd
  • 1600m- Isaac Pelletier, 2nd and Caleb Pelletier, 3rd
  • 3200m- Michael Mastraccio, 3rd
  • 4x800m- Caleb Pelletier, Gabe Waterman, Alex Lemay, and Isaac Pelletier, 1st
  • Javelin- William Morin, 3rd, Carter Huff, 4th
  • Shot Put- Ethan Davie, 2nd
  • Pole Vault- Jack VanGieson, 1st

The track and field team will host their next meet at Alumni Stadium on April 30.

GIRLS OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD

The girls’ track and field team competed at Gorham High School on April 18 against Westbrook, Gorham and South Portland. The team placed third overall and had athletes place in multiple events. The highlights from this meet include:

  • 800m- Annalise Stimmell, 1st
  • 3200m- Annalise Stimmell, 2nd
  • Javelin- Georgia Whitman, 1st, Olivia Farrington, 3rd
  • Discus- Georgia Whitman, 2nd, Ryenn Baker, 3rd, Sam Dunbar, 4th
  • 4x800m Relay- Samone Gallagher, Eliza Allen, Addie Fiandaca and Annalise Stimmell, 1st
  • 4x400m Relay- Mattea Peters, Claire Pordon, Bella McCall and Samone Gallagher, 2nd

The track and field team will host their next meet at Alumni Stadium on April 30.

SOFTBALL

The softball team started the season on April 24 with a 1-15 loss at home against Carrabec. A notable performance was from Ysabella Mitchell who had a double and was the one run Sanford had. 

They travel to Noble on on April 28 and to Biddeford on May 1.
