SANFORD, Maine – Six weeks of the NFL season have gone by and the MVP race is starting to really form, some of the top candidates as of now are Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB, Baker Mayfield, Los Angeles Rams QB, Matthew Stafford, and of course, New England Patriots QB, Drake Maye.
Maye has had an electric start to the season that is blowing many people’s expectations out of the water. Through six weeks he has thrown 1,522 yards, 10 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, with a 73.2% completion percentage, a passer rating of 112.5 and he has also added 138 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns.
Maye’s most recent game came against the New Orleans Saints, where he threw 261 yards and 3 touchdowns, all three of his touchdowns came in the first half. A very impressive stat line when you factor in a 61 yard touchdown being taken away due to offensive pass interference on wide receiver Stefon Diggs, which many people are saying is one of the worst flags of the year.
Just a week prior, Maye led the Patriots in a statement game against the Buffalo Bills which ended with the Patriots coming out on top 23-20. The Bills since the start of the year have been many people’s favorite to win the Super Bowl so the Patriots knew how big of a game that was. Thanks to Maye the Patriots are now first in the AFC East after beating the Bills, and the Bills then losing to the Falcons this week on Monday Night Football.
The Patriots have the easiest remaining schedule for the rest of the year which should help Maye build his MVP case more. Some people may try to use that against him however in the end that probably won’t matter considering the expectations for the Patriots still weren’t very high.
Some more impressive accomplishments for Maye this season include having a 4 game streak with at least 200 passing yards and a 70% completion percentage, this is tied with former Patriots QB and greatest QB of all time, Tom Brady, for longest streak like that. He has also tied former Green Bay Packer, Aaron Rodgers, and Los Angeles Chargers QB, Justin Herbert, for most games in a row with a passer rating of over 100 with five games in a row. On top of all that, he also has five straight games with 200+ passing yards and a 100+ passer rating, this puts him tied for third place all time for QBs at the age of 23 or under, he is tied with Kansas City Chiefs QB, Patrick Mahomes, and Dallas Cowboys QB, Dak Prescott, you can almost assume Maye will extend that streak farther than five games to surpass who he is tied with, while Mahomes and Prescott will not since they’re both older than 23 now.
Drake Maye has a very strong case for MVP, and barring a sudden stretch of bad games, it’s hard to see him not being MVP, especially with how many people on social media are saying he should be the MVP.
