SANFORD — The Sanford girls’ soccer team defeated Gorham 2-1 Tuesday night on homecoming, marking their first win over the Rams in four years.

Sanford trailed 1-0 early in the first half before Kailyn Stuart scored for the Spartans at the four-minute mark to tie the game. With less than two minutes remaining, Annilise Stimmel netted the winning goal, assisted by Ava Hudson.

“The girls fought hard for all 80 minutes and it was a very exciting comeback win over a strong Gorham team. The energy from the homecoming crowd was great, and it was a fun atmosphere!” said Head Coach Dave MCall.

Prior to the victory, Sanford was ranked eighth in the Class standings. The win moved them up to sixth, a more comfortable position with the playoffs approaching. The top eight teams advance to the postseason.

“In all my four years of playing against them, I don’t think we’ve won against them, so I knew it was going to be a challenge, but I definitely knew we could pull out a win,” Sophie Olivo said when asked what her expectations were going into the game.

The team will host Scarborough for Senior Night on Oct. 21 to close out the regular season.
