SANFORD — Sanford High School’s Peer Helpers program is hosting its annual food drive from Monday, Oct. 27, through Wednesday, Nov. 20. Collection bins for each class are located at the bottom of the Grey Wing (by the main lobby).
The event helps feed the families of 50 students for the Thanksgiving holiday.
According to national estimates, millions of people — including about 13 million children — go without a meal on Thanksgiving Day. Sanford’s Peer Helpers aim to make a difference by providing Thanksgiving meals for more than 250 Sanford people each year. The effort is supported by local businesses, clubs, sports teams and teachers.
“My favorite thing about this program is seeing the appreciation on students’ and families’ faces, as well as getting the entire school involved in doing a good thing,” said Peer Helpers organizer Mrs. Letourneau, school counseling director.
Each class is assigned a specific item to donate:
- Freshmen: instant potatoes
- Sophomores: turkey gravy and cranberry sauce
- Juniors: canned vegetables
- Seniors: stuffing
Every item donated earns points for the class. The class with the most points will have each student entered into a raffle for prizes. Expired items will not be counted, please check dates before submitting items
If you would like to donate send items to SHS main office.
