December 5-12 Team Recap + Student Athlete Standouts

The following athletes had a standout week as the opening of the Winter Sports season 2025 – 2026. This series will run from the previous week’s Friday-Thursday and be posted on Mondays during the winter sports season.

Boys Basketball

The Spartans built a 53-26 halftime lead over the Tigers in Sanford last Friday, Dec. 5, at the home opener. Luke Gendron, Carter Giroux, Dylan Gendron and Bryce Adams combined for all 28 Sanford points in the opening quarter. Luke Gendron finished with 20 points, Giroux had 16, and Adams scored 14. Overall, the Spartans played at a pace too difficult for the Tigers to keep up with.

But on Tuesday night this week at Windham, the Spartans won in a packed gymnasium against the back-to-back state champions. Competing in opposing team territory during a tribute night, the Spartans returned from a 16-point deficit. To clinch an impressive win that is putting them on the map in Maine.

Dylan Gendron, this week’s standout athlete, scored 14 points in the opener against Biddeford and thenscored 13 of his 30 points in the fourth quarter, demonstrating his ability to dominate on the floor.

The boys are away for both games this week.

Girls Basketball

The Varsity Girls team opened away on Friday, Dec. 5, in a tough matchup against the Tigers. Jaslinn Johnson’s foul shot in the final minute kept the Spartans ahead. The team won by another foul shot made with 4.3 seconds left to break their tie.

At their home game on Tuesday, Dec 9, Annalise Stimmell broke a 46-46 tie with a three-point play, and Sanford held on for a 55-52 win over Windham in a Class A South girls basketball game Tuesday night in Sanford. Paige Sevigny added 15 points, and Jaslinn Johnson had 13.

This week’s standout athlete, Mollie Puffer, scored 14 points in the opener against Biddfeford and led the Spartans with 19 points against Windham, with the team winning foul shot against Biddeford to her credit.

The Spartans play at home against Kennebunk this Tuesday at 6 pm.

Wresting

The Spartans wrestled in the York Sullivan Duals on Saturday, Dec. 6, and continued with their four-year win streak as the first-place team with more than 6 teams competing.

On Wednesday, Dec 10, the Spartans won their matches against Scarborough and Kennebunk, moving them to a record of 6-0 this season.

Ryder LaChance, wrestling’s standout athlete, competed at 126 lbs and went 5-1 this week. He beat All-State wrestler Grisham Shields at home decisively with a huge pin. “Ryder has been wrestling incredibly well since his year off last year” said coach Smith.  He will be a big part of the team’s success in post season.

Sanford Indoor Track

Last Saturday, the Spartans competed against 9 other teams at USM. Dezmond Donegan earned 2nd place in the men’s 200-meter dash, the top running competitor from Sanford for that meet. Bella McCall earned 3rd place in the 400-meter dash. Grace Eaton also performed strongly with a third-place finish in the 600-meter dash.

This week’s standout track athlete, Georgia Whitman, broke her and the previous school record for Women’s Shotput Throwing by increasing from last seasons 20”6 to 30’6 this year. She also managed to qualify for states with that performance early in the season, earning her 2nd place at the meet.

Note*

Spartans Swimming is combined with Massabesic and will compete this Friday.
