SANFORD- Five students at SHS swam in the end-of-season Maine high school swim meet in Waterville, Maine, at Colby College. They were on a co-op team with Massabesic High School because Sanford does not have their own team. Both schools competed alongside each other and were eligible to make relays containing athletes from both schools. All students who swam scored points for the co-op, not the individual school.

To swim at the Class A championships, each swimmer had to qualify in an event by going under or on times established by the Maine Principals Association. Three of the Sanford swimmers qualified in individual events, and two were in relays.

The five swimmers from our school who competed include Charlie Puffer (junior), Amalia Fajardo (Senior), Claire Pordon (Sophomore), Rachel Tanguey (Senior), and Caity Szymbor (Sophomore).

The results of the swim meet were:

  • Claire Pordon– 5th overall in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.33

          – 6th overall in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.03

          – Also competed in two girls’ relays

  • Caity Szymbor– 18th overall in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:23.86

               – 14th overall in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:27.80

  • Charlie Puffer-  21st overall in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:11.75

          – 29th overall in the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.47

  • Relays
    • Caity Szymbor, Amalia Fajardo, Claire Pordon, Rachel Tanguey
      • 400 freestyle relay- 4:26.04 and placed 11th
      • 200 medley relay-  2:07.71 and placed 10th

New swim team member Charlie Puffer said, “I’m really happy I joined the swim team this year. It was a fun new experience that I think everyone should get a chance to try.” He just started swimming this year and was able to qualify in two individual events with no prior swim experience.

Something to note is that everyone makes the swim team, and there are no tryouts. There is no competitive swim experience needed, and individuals can swim in every meet except for states.

The swim team is always looking for new members, and you can ask Mr. Lemelin or those already on the team if interested for next year!
