It’s finally happening. Valve is releasing its second-ever gaming device, the Steam Machine, nicknamed the “GabeCube” after Valve’s CEO, Gabe Newell, later this year. To prepare potential buyers and developers, the gaming giant has released the device’s specifications.

The device seems to be targeting casual gamers, particularly those who play on consoles such as Microsoft’s current Xbox Series line-up and Sony’s PS5 series, with both its hardware and software. It runs on the highly popular Linux distribution Steam OS 3.0, created by Valve for their Steam Deck handheld in 2022. The operating system uses a console-like desktop environment, very similar to the Steam app’s Big Picture Mode. It’s a straightforward, easy-to-use layout for anyone with a history on consoles.

Steam OS is nothing new, but the Steam Machine’s hardware is where things get interesting. Simply put, it’s just okay. Don’t expect to play Cyberpunk 2077 at Ultra graphics with raytracing on this. The Steam Machine sports a mid-range, semi-custom AMD Zen 4 6C/12T CPU, accompanied by a semi-custom AMD RDNA3 28U GPU, featuring 8GB of VRAM. The latter has drawn some criticism for its low VRAM capacity, with a vocal section of Valve’s audience hoping for 12 or more gigabytes. Additionally, the device will have 16GB of DDR5 RAM, which is more than enough to play a majority of modern games at low to medium settings, especially when you consider the PS5 Pro shares this value. As for storage, the Steam Machine will feature half-terabyte and two-terabyte SSD options, providing flexibility in desired storage.

Finally, the mini PC will feature an HDMI port for connecting to displays, DisplayPort 1.4 connectivity, three USB3 ports, and a USB2 port.

Overall, the Steam Machine isn’t a particularly beefy device, setting itself up as a solid entry-level mini gaming PC for those who want to make the switch to PC gaming without abandoning the console lifestyle entirely. It will also launch alongside the Steam Frame, Valve’s mixed-reality headset, and the revised Steam Controller.
