SANFORD, Maine – Sanford High School’s Winter Ball is set to return for the first time since 2019. It will take place in the Competition Gym on Saturday, Jan. 20 from 7-10 p.m.
SHS Abroad is the new club taking on the dance, which celebrates the end of the first semester, while the Student Council and Pep Club prepare for the following week of events, pep rally and spirit days.
The winter ball is a semi-formal dance. Student IDs are needed for admission and tickets are $10 at the door. If students wish to bring a guest from another school they must retrieve the appropriate forms from the main office or assistant principal’s office. There will be concessions for sale at the dance.
The Winter Ball will kick off Winter Carnival week, which will be packed full of activities like spirit week, sports, and the winter carnival. Spirit week will have themes for each day, aimed towards students to come to our home games, but the themes have yet to be determined.
One of the bigger sports events of the week is the doubleheader basketball games on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 5:30 p.m. with the varsity girls team, followed by a varsity boys game at 7 p.m.
Nate Smith, the Pep Club advisor added that he hopes the winter carnival can “promote winter sports in the way homecoming does for fall sports.”
The following Monday will start the School’s Spirit Week, from January 22 to the 26. During this week there will be many activities for the students to participate in.
“Student Council is hoping that winter spirit week will run similarly to homecoming week, with the same energy, excitement and participation,” said Student Council Vice President Tatum Milley.
Spirit day themes are yet to be determined, but there are plans for a pep rally to take place on Friday. Students will be dismissed from their classes to attend, and there has been some discussion about a possible sledding party following the pep rally.
According to Milley, something new this year taking place will be the Ice Prince nominees. Senior boys will be nominated for winter sports and clubs, just like Homecoming Queen nominees. The winner will then be crowned with their escort that Friday during the pep rally.
“Ice Prince has been done in the past and we are very excited to bring back the tradition,” said Mr. Smith, Student Council advisor.
Students and faculty all are anticipating a week full of activities and are looking forward to seeing Sanford High School get ready for an unforgettable week of winter festivities.
