Winter sports finished 2023 with hard-fought battles and many victories
Boys Basketball
The boys varsity basketball team won two big games leading into winter break. They first defeated Edward Little 60-51 on Dec. 19. Tanner McCann led the team with 21 points. Coach Mills credited Tyler Sevigny and Dylan Gendron with some great individual defense against EL’s top players.
They hosted cross-town rival Noble on Thursday, Dec. 21, winning in an exciting 88-75 contest. Makai Bougie recorded a double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Brady Adams added 21 points and Dominic Veino added 18.
The Spartans found their third victory of the week on the road, defeating Lewiston 60-32 on Saturday, Dec. 23. The team fell to Transit Tech (NY) in a Holiday Classic exhibition game at the Portland Expo on Wednesday, Jan 27.
Their first game of 2024 is at home against Bonny Eagle on Tuesday, Jan. 2, followed by an away game at Gorham on Thursday, Jan. 4.
Girls Basketball
The varsity Spartans traveled to Edward Little on Tuesday, Dec. 19, edging out their opponents 49-45. Julissa McBarron paced the Spartans with 19 points.
The team traveled to Noble on Thursday, Dec. 21, earning themselves a decisive 58-20 victory over the Knights. Addie Fiandaca led the way with 15 points followed by Annalise Stimmell with 14 points.
They hosted Lewiston on Wednesday, Dec. 27, winning 66-51. McBarron scored 20 of her 26 points in the second half for the Spartans, who used a 17-6 run in the fourth quarter to close out the Blue Devils. Paige Sevigny and Sadie Sevigny added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Coach Kearson credits big defensive contributions from Hailey Tarboox and Ava Hudson, who “did a very good job of containing their best two players.”
They fell 48-41 to a talented Gorham on Dec. 29. Paige Sevigny led with 15 points, followed by McBarron with 11.
Their first games of 2024 take place on Tuesday, Jan. 2 against Bonny Eagle on the road, then host Noble on Thursday, Jan. 4.
Indoor Track
The Spartans competed in the USM Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 30. against schools from Class A, B and C along with schools from New Hampshire.
Rhylen Avery placed eigth in the 55m dash out of 151 athletes. CJ Grant cleared 6’0” in high jump which earned him fourth place in the event. Tucker Walker threw 50’2” in shot put, earning third place and breaking a school record. Mason Van Gieson and Landon Gosling scored fourth and sixth in the pole vault, respectively. The sprint medley relay team Of Avery, Grant, Arthur Bahuze and Issac Pelletier placed 6th with a time of 4:10.
Their next meet is at USM on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
Wrestling
Sanford Wrestling traveled to Portland High School on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
The Spartans hosted their home opener against Noble and Scarborough on Saturday, Dec. 23. They defeated Scarborough 64-15, but fell to Noble in a close 34-30 battle.
