Introducing: Spartan Athletes of the Week

New to 2024, Sanford Athletics & The Spartan Times honor two athletes each week for top performances

The Spartan Times and Sanford Athletics have combined forces to establish “Athletes of the Week”, effective immediately.

Each week, both a male and female student-athlete will be selected as Sanford High School’s Spartan Athlete of the Week honors.  They will receive a certificate, Gatorade and protein bar from the Athletics Dept. At the end of the season, there will be another opportunity for all recognized athletes’ coaches, teachers, parents and fellow student-athletes to recognize their accomplishments.

“We’re excited to continue finding ways to showcase our athletes and their hard work,” said Athletic Director Zachary Lemelin.

The two very first Spartan Athletes of the week are senior Makai Bougie and freshman Paige Sevigny.

Bougie, a senior on the boys varsity basketball team, led his team in scoring the first week of January, putting up 27 points against Bonny Eagle on Jan. 2 and another 12 against undefeated Gorham. He also tallied 16 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block.

“Over the last several games Makai has done a really good job of being a balanced scorer,” said Coach Mills. “His ability to shoot from three, paired with his ability to finish at the rim, makes him a difficult player to defend. What makes Makai unique is his ability to rebound and defend at a high level. His leadership in practices also continues to improve each week.”

Sevigny, a freshman on the girls varsity basketball team, has made a big impact in her first season as a Spartan. In the first week of January, she led the Spartans with 12 points against Bonny Eagle and put up another 12 against Noble.

“Paige has been a big-time spark plug for us coming off the bench so far this season,” said Coach Kearson.  “Her impact this season has been so big that she has earned herself a starting spot.  In her debut against Greely, she carried us with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 of 6 from the foul line, while shooting 61.5% from the floor. This is huge for us to help lighten Julissa [McBarron]’s load who is big in the scoring department for us. Paige is one of the top freshmen in our league and if I had to guess, she’s definitely one of the top candidates for rookie of the year in our league this season.”

Congratulations to the first-ever Spartan Athletes of the Week!
