Boys Basketball

The boys varsity basketball team lost 69-65 to South Portland on Tuesday, Jan. 9. Tanner McCann led the way in scoring with 19 points and 6 made three-pointers. Dylan Gendron and Brady Adams each added 12.

“This was a close loss for us, but it provides a unique learning opportunity,” said Coach Mills. “Hard times create opportunities for us to continue growing as a team and progress towards being the best team we can be by the end of the season.”

They fell to Scarborough on Friday, January 12. Dominic Veino led Sanford with 13 points, followed by Makai Bougie with 12, and Adams and Gendron with 11 apiece.

This week, the team plays Lewiston on MLK Day and travels to Massabesic on Friday, Jan. 19.

Girls Basketball

The varsity Spartans traveled to Greely on Tuesday, Jan. 9, defeating the Rangers 40-26. Paige Sevigny paced the Spartans with 21 points and Hailey Tarbox added a season-high eight points to help lead the Spartans to victory.

“The Spartans were all bout the defense in this matchup,” said Coach Kearson. Greely averaged 45 points per contest this season, and the Spartans were able to hold the Rangers to 26. 

They hosted Scarborough on Friday, Jan. 12, in a nail-biter that went down to the final seconds. Sadie Sevigny, who finished with six points, hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with less than 45 seconds to seal the 33-31 victory. Julissa McBarron led the Spartans with 13 points and eight rebounds. Kearson credits Tarbox with high-energy defense all game long.

“This by far was the best team win of the season,” Kearson said.

This week, the team hosts Massabesic on Friday, Jan. 19.

Indoor Track

The Spartans competed on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at USM against Cheverus, Falmouth, Kennebunk and Westbrook. The girls took 4th place with 28 pts. while the boys earned 2nd with 116.5 pts. Top finishes included:

They had a quick turnaround and competed again on Saturday, Jan. 13.

“Despite our late meets, athletes have shown true dedication to the sport,” said Coach Anna Lane. “Coach Lewis and I have witnessed several noteworthy performances and personal records beaten.”

Next up, the team competes at USM on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m.

Wrestling

The Spartans battled Massabesic and York teams on Wednesday, Jan. 10. They fell to the Mustangs 46-30.

On Saturday, Jan. 13, the team competed in the Dan Gionet Memorial Tournament in Pelham, N.H. Eleven out of the 14 wrestlers who completed placed. Top finishers included:

“It was nice to get out of state for some confidence-boosting wins,” said Coach Smith. “Every wrestler won at least two matches and 11 of our 14 wrestlers placed.” 

The Spartans will travel to Timberlane High School on Saturday, Jan. 20.
