Varsity Sports Recap: Jan. 29- Feb. 3

Boys Basketball

The boys varsity basketball team defeated Thornton Academy 52-50 on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Makai Bougie led with 19 points, followed by Dylan Gendron with 13 and Tanner McCann with 10.

They fell to Bonny Eagle 55-52 on Friday, Feb. 2. Bougie again led the Spartans with 17, followed by Ben Terril with 11.

Their senior recognition game is at home against Deering on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. Their last game of the regular season is at South Portland on Thursday, Feb. 8.

Girls Basketball

Sanford fell to Thornton Academy 59-51 despite an impressive fourth-quarter rally on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Paige Sevigny led the Spartans with 20 points. Ava Hudson added 10 points and nine rebounds.

They defeated Bonny Eagle 47-30 at home on Friday, Feb. 2. Sadie Sevigny and Hailey Tarbox both pitched in 11. points each, with Hudson adding nine.

The team travels to Massabesic on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and hosts their senior recognition game at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8.

Unified Basketball

The Unified Basketball team traveled to Thornton Academy on Thursday, Feb. 1. They travel to Wells High School on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Cheerleading

The cheer team placed fifth in the Class A South Regional Competition on Saturday, Feb. 3 and will now compete in the State Championship at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday, Feb. 10.  The competition will begin at 4 p.m. and Sanford will perform just after 4:30. MPA ticketing for this competitions is now digital at GOFAN.  

The Indoor Track team will be competing in the Southwesterns competition this Saturday, Feb. 10 at USM. 

Wrestling

The Spartans competed in their last regular season match on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Cheverus High School. They defeated Bonny Eagle 45-30 but fell to Cheverus 39-36.

James Chaplick continued to push hard going into the postseason with a win against his Bonny Eagle rival Zack Nelson, according to Coach Smith. The win will most likely secure a second seed going into Regionals.

They placed second as runners-up in the Maine Duals Championship on Saturday, Feb. 3. Canton Hill completed a 5-0 week finishing with a dramatic pin to start Sanford’s finals match against Noble.

The team will now move on to the Regional Wrestling Championship, held here at SHS on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 9 a.m.
