SANFORD, Maine – Last week, Sanford High School’s Math Team, led by coaches Kailee Colbeth and Adam Soule, made an appearance at the Maine State Math Meet, hosted at the Augusta Civic Center.

Eleven of SHS’s best math students represented Sanford at States, including Zach Parison (captain), Lamar Amoakohene (captain), Aidan Gendron (captain), Corinna Vitale, Rowan Winchell, Quang Lam, Elsie Gendron, Jennifer Danis, Samone Gallagher, Rishi Patel and Ethan Davie (alternate).

The meet was an all-day event, consisting of 89 teams from schools all over Maine. The meet began with the individual rounds, in which mathletes completed six timed rounds of questions from a variety of math topics. This was followed by the relay rounds, in which each player was given an individual problem to solve and extra points were awarded if all players on the team got the correct answer. The meet ended with the team rounds, with each team working together to solve ten increasingly complex problems.

Overall, Sanford performed well, with three players each scoring over 40 points in the individual rounds (Zach Parison, Rowan Winchell and Aidan Gendron). The team struggled in the team and relay rounds, but placed in the top third of teams at the meet, ranking 29th.

This marks the end of a very successful season for the Math Team, which surpassed many expectations. Here are some of the season’s highlights:

This season saw plenty of major individual success and improvement, with the majority of Team A achieving career-high scoring totals over the five regular season meets. In Meet 3, three different players erupted for 40-point scores, including freshman Ethan Davie. The team also boasted four 100-point scorers for the first time, including two 150-point scorers (Lamar Amoakohene and Zachary Parison) who each finished in the top 50 out of nearly 400 players in the division.

Sanford’s performance as a whole was impressive as well, and the team is still improving. The contribution was widespread, with each Team A player scoring in every meet they participated in. Sanford also outscored all other attending teams at each regular season meet, finishing 11th in the Pi-Cone South division. Seven of the team’s top 10 scorers were underclassmen and can expect to take bigger roles on the team next season as the seniors leave.

With the end of the season, recruitment has begun for the 2024-2025 season. If you are interested in being a part of another great Math Team season next year, contact Mrs. Colbeth at kcolbeth@sanford.org.
