SANFORD, Maine – On Wednesday, May 15, National Honor Society (NHS) Seniors and Juniors participated in a cleanup at the Trolley Museum in Kennebunk.
Each year NHS members attend a Day of Caring Event to continue acts of kindness and service in local communities.
The four pillars of the National Honor Society are Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. As an organization, they’re constantly striving to uphold these pillars and serve as role models to the community.
At the Museum, members were divided into groups to help restore the museum which will benefit those in the future that attend. For example, some groups cleaned the trolley’s, others painted, and a lot of yard work was accomplished.
This was NHS’s second year of attending the Trolley Museum for The Day of Caring. Mrs. Thompson, one of the NHS Advisor’s shared, “The Trolley Museum actually reached out to us and noted that the day of Caring was after graduation and asked if we wanted our own specific date that we could go and help them. Us going last year built that relationship, so that they were able to look forward to having us this year.”
Thompson also added, “They really liked what we did and they loved the energy that we had and the enthusiasm and in turn we had lunch, trolley rides, as well as learned about the history, so for us I think that it’s really cool that we can go there, but then also be a part of something bigger and a part of history.”
The relationship built between the Museum and Sanford’s NHS, is very important, as it will allow for the group to continue to attend in years following as well as continue to help with the upkeep of this Historical site and educate future generations.
If you have any questions regarding the service projects that NHS participates in, or how to become more involved within your community, please contact Mrs. Thompson at sthompson@sanford.org or Mrs. Works, at lworks@sanford.org
