SANFORD, Maine – At the end of the 2023-2024 school year, three of Sanford High School’s (SHS) Administrative Assistants are hanging up their badges and saying their farewells.

Marguerite Smith, the first face you see upon your arrival to the building, is retiring after working at Sanford High School for 27 years.

Before she was hired full-time, she worked as a substitute in the office and loved interacting with the students and being part of the school community. So when that position became available, she jumped at the opportunity to fill that spot.

One of her favorite things about working at SHS is the day before graduation when the seniors march through the school to “Pomp and Circumstance” over the intercom. She loves seeing how happy and proud they are.

Her advice to the person who may take on her role is to “try and stay as organized as possible. It can get very busy at times, but keeping things you reference quite a bit on your desk in folders and binders.”

Following retirement, she plans to spend a couple days a week with her grandchild and hopes to do some traveling.

Another smiling face you see when you walk into Sanford High, Joanne Bourassa, will also retire after more than 31 years of employment.

After working in the Main Office for about five years, she moved to the SHS Principal’s Office, where she’s been ever since. She’s always enjoyed having the same schedule as her children having the summer off, snow days, vacation weeks, etc.

She has always loved seeing how much the students grow and mature from freshman year to senior year, to her handing them their diplomas while they all seem so happy and proud.

Her advice to others is, “To stay calm, and that you are only one person and whatever doesn’t get done today, there’s always tomorrow.”

After retirement, she and her husband plan to travel, spend time with their grandkids and enjoy life.

When you walk into the School Counseling Office, you will see Donna Cormier. After working at Sanford High for over 10 years, she has decided to see what else life has to offer.

Cormier graduated from SHS and when the opportunity came up to work here, she thought it was a great way to come back to where it all began.

She hopes that over the years she’s made an impact on the students and staff by offering them a smile or encouraging words to brighten their day. She will miss all the students and staff dearly.

Her advice to others taking on her role is to just smile.

Following her retirement, she plans to enjoy each new day and see what the day brings. Her happy place is her patio where she will spend time reading and enjoying her breakfast each morning. She also plans to spend more time in Boston with her two favorite people, her two boys.

Sanford High School wishes these wonderful women the best in the next chapter. Thank you for all you have done for us in this building, we will miss you more than you know!
