SANFORD, Maine – Sanford and Massabesic superintendents have decided to combine the two school districts, effective for the 2025-26 school year.
This decision was made in an attempt to reduce costs while boosting athletics, the arts and test scores. This new school district will be called Sassaford, combining the two previous names.
“Sassy the Slug” will be the school’s new mascot, a red and green banana slug to represent both Sanford and Massabesic’s original school colors.

The new location for Sassaford will be in Sanford’s own mills, although renovations of the buildings will not be able to start until halfway through the school year. Although there will only be minor interruptions throughout the school day, students will be required to wear a Sassy the Slug hard hat to protect themselves from any possible materials.
Sanford High School Principal Mrs. Gibson says, “I am excited to see the Spartans ride along the Mustangs!”

To boost school spirit, students will be encouraged to dress in their best slug attire each Friday. Each week, the best-dressed student will receive a brand-new Sassaford tracksuit. Additionally, we will be holding tryouts to be the first Sassy the Slug mascot on a future date. Stay tuned to find out when!
Sanford student Olivia Farrington expressed her excitement for the change, “I am super excited for the change because I am excited to hang out with my friends from Massabesic, not only outside of school but in school too.”
Sassaford will be the most populated school in the state of Maine. Keep in mind that there will be lots of competition to play on your favorite sports teams, so practice this summer if you wish to be one of the Sassaford Slugs.
If you have any questions or concerns about this decision, check today’s date for more information.
