Sanford High’s New History Teacher
Welcome back to The Spartan Times! We have a new teacher feature to get you familiar with some of the new staff in our building this school year. First up is Mr. Ryan, a history teacher who joined us this year. We asked him a few questions to learn more about him—check out his answers below!
Q: What made you want to become a teacher?
Mr. Ryan: I had a professor in NYC who used to take us to the places we were learning about. It brought history to life and made me appreciate how important it is to learn—and to teach—history.
Q: Why did you choose to teach history specifically?
Mr. Ryan: I’ve lived in many parts of the country and worked in different jobs. That helped me see how important it is to understand history, different viewpoints, and cultural differences. Teaching history felt like the best way to share that.
Q: What’s the best part of being a teacher?
Mr. Ryan: I really enjoy working with young people. Every day is different, and there’s always something to laugh about.
Q: Where are you from?
Mr. Ryan: I’m originally from Connecticut, but I’ve lived in Memphis, Tennessee, and New York City, where I went to high school and college. I also spent summers in Dallas, Texas.
Q: What grades do you teach?
Mr. Ryan: I teach grades 9 through 12.
Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Mr. Ryan: Japan—for the food!
Q: Could you make it through the day without caffeine?
Mr. Ryan: Only with a headache!
Q: What were you involved in during high school?
Mr. Ryan: I played football, basketball, and baseball. I also skied and performed music.
