Decision Day May 1 at SHS

SHS has to set a new cell phone rule at school due to the state signing a bill banning cell phones with the policy to being August 1

By Leah Lagueux

SANFORD- Governor Janet Mills recently signed the law that all cell phones will be banned during school hours starting August 1st. The law is a “Bell-to-Bell” policy, showing that phones are not to be used during school hours but can be on school property.

School boards will have until Aug. 1 to make a new policy, “Prohibiting use of personal electronic devices during the school day”. This new policy will not just be cell phones, it will also include personal devices like computers, iPad, Apple Watch, etc.

We are now one of 33 states to have a cell phone bell-to-bell law imposed.

Students have had very strong feelings after hearing this new information. Some students state that it could be a dangerous situation to throw kids into sometimes.

Junior Paige Sevigny said, “I think I knew it was coming because every time I look around, I see people on their phones”.  Some students had a feeling about it coming because our school already tried to make a policy on phones, but it didn’t go so well.

Principal Tracy Gibson said, “It’s a law, and we have to take the next steps to develop a new policy.” Taking the next steps will look like “having to tier the consequences” for students.
