Decision Day May 1 at SHS

When we sat down with the newest English teacher at Sanford High School, Mrs. Vachon, she opened up about her first year teaching and explained how she will improve and get more involved in the future.

SANFORD – “My middle school teacher, Mr. Blunda, influenced me to be a teacher. He created a welcoming, fun learning environment while also challenging me to expand my knowledge and push myself. I wanted to be someone else’s Mr. Blunda, someone who challenges students and is always an open door for them,” said Ms. Vachon. She wants to create the same learning environment here at SHS.

Ms. Vachon explains that the most rewarding part of teaching so far has been watching her students improve and become more confident. “Whether it is earning an A on an assignment, getting their first job, or winning a sport,” she loves watching her students get excited about their accomplishments.

Along with making sure her students feel welcomed and supported, she is receiving the same treatment back from the SHS community. “From the moment I arrived, everyone was kind, welcoming, and willing to help. I have felt supported by everyone, from administration to custodial staff. The students also reflect this same sense of community, and even as a new teacher, they made me feel like I truly belong here.” She explains that everyone, especially the English department, has been there for her whenever she was unsure or needed support, and she feels comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance.

Being a first-year teacher can be challenging, but she believes that caffeine and seeing her students show up, excited to learn, has motivated her this year. She was asked what advice she would give to a first-year teacher. “I would say, do not be afraid to ask for help, and do not expect yourself to be perfect. Focus on doing your best each day and being there for your students. That is what matters most.”

SHS is very lucky to have a teacher like Ms. Vachon, to encourage students and make learning fun. Make sure you stop by and remind her that we appreciate all of her hard work.
