The fall season at SHS has kicked off, and we are here to recap the first week since school began.

Football
Last Thursday, the Spartans opened up against Marshood in the first game with their new coach, Ethan Stump, in a shootout that was kept close at the halftime mark with a score of 28-27. It ended in a loss, 50-27 after the Rams took away with the lead in the second half.
Tyson Kimball and Logan Sevigny both contributed with one touchdown, Michael Kiley also had two touchdowns with one being an 89 yard rushing touchdown.
Kimball was quoted by saying “we need to practice tackling and running through” and “it was a one score game until the fourth quarter” and noted looking forward to the future and the rest of the season.
Boys Soccer
On 9/5 the boys soccer team traveled to Noble for their first game of the season. The game resulted in a 2-1 loss in double overtime. The team is full of many varsity returners including Ivo Mpeko who scored the lone goal.
“We were a little sad at our first performance, but we are excited to turn it up this season,” said Captain Cam Provencher.
Girls Soccer
Newly coached by Alyanna Beaudoin, a recently graduated college soccer player, the girls have kicked off their season with strength.
Girls soccer hosted their home opener last Tuesday against Massabesic in a 2-1 win with goals from Cassidy Hickey and Ava Dillalo. The new season brought many new players with only 4 senior varsity returners.
On September 10th they tied Thornton Academy in double overtime for a successful outcome against a competitive team. Cassidy Hickey scored the only goal for the Spartans.
Captain Lilly Peters mentioned being excited about their “future especially because of the new coach and exciting new talent”.
Volleyball
On 9/8 the Volleyball team hosted Portland in their home opener. The Spartans got up early in a 2-0 lead and eventually went to 5 sets in a 3-2 win. Kennedy Dennis and MacKenzie Mains both had double digit digs as well as Jaslinn Joshnson with 14 digs and 9 kills.
On 9/10 Sanford played Massabesic and lost in a match 0-3.
Senior Captain Emi Chase mentioned as a team they have “room for improvement” but she is “excited for the rest of the season”.
Field Hockey
Field Hockey hosted the rival and team to watch, Biddeford on 9/3 in a double-overtime loss 5-4. Ella Tederous has 2 goals with one in the final minutes to force overtime. Reese Beaudoin and Zoey McCann also contributed with goals.
Soon after the team beat Scarborough 3-0 and then South Portland 11-1. Leaving their record 2-1.
Captain Hailey Payeur shared her excitement for the rest of the season with our staff.
Golf
Sanford recently won 7 ½ to 5 ½ with total points of 250-256 against Bonney Eagle. Ben Langstaff shot the team low, 41, and won the high medal for the match.
Sanford is currently 2-2 on the season with the next match happening on 9/15 vs. Thornton Academy at Sanford Country Club.
Luke Gendron shared that he is feeling “pretty good” about the team’s future despite some “tough losses” and is “looking forward to states”.
Cross Country
The cross country team is currently 0-3 and has faced some tough injuries. Assistant Coach Lindsay Strout mentioned strong individual performances, with some people earning new PR’s for the season as a high point.
Cynthia Carroll mentioned having “two girls place in the top 10 of the last race” as a team success. Jack Van Gieson is excited to have everyone “back in shape” and off the injured list.
