SANFORD – High school athletics just wrapped up another very successful homecoming week. From Monday, Sept. 21, through Friday, Sept. 25, each sport hosted one home game, where SHS students were encouraged to come out and support their school.
Opening up the week on Monday night was boys soccer; they were able to take home their first win of the season with a score of 4-2 against the Bonny Eagle Scots. The four goals were scored by Eli Laurendeau, Ivo Mpeko, Gabe Phillips, and Finley Mann.
Following, on Tuesday night was the girls soccer team, and although they didn’t end with a win, losing to South Portland 2-1, it was a close and physical game, with Sanford’s one goal scored by sophomore Rihanna Provencher. When asked about the game, senior captain Lily Peters said, “The energy was so electric, from the crowd, to the bench, to the energy we had on the field; it was really motivational,” and although they didn’t get the result they wanted, she said, “It was one of our best games of the season; we worked together as a team … and I’m hoping to have more games like that.”
There were no games on Wednesday night, but Thursday, Sept. 24, was a busy night. Kicking off the night was the one cross-country home meet of the year, doubling as not only their homecoming meet but also their senior night. Senior captain Isaac Pelletier placed first, breaking a course record.
Following the meet, the Sanford/Kennebunk field hockey team won against Gorham 7-0. The Sanford goals were scored by Miranda Payeur (2), Reese Beaudoin (3), Ella Tederous, and Charlotte Johnson
The last event of the night was Sanford’s volleyball team, winning 3-1 against Windham.
Some outstanding members of the match included:
Junior Jaslinn Johnson with 11 kills
Junior Kennedy Denis with 16 digs
Junior Kenzie Mains with 17 assists.
Ending the week on Friday, Sept. 25, was Sanford’s varsity football team against Massebesic; although it was a 28-6 loss, it was an intense game. Sanford’s one touchdown was scored by Junior Gabe Williams, who said, “It was a really physical game, a fun game to play, and it was my first varsity touchdown.”
Each year, homecoming reminds us that you can always show up and support your school.
