SANFORD- Throughout November, Sanford High students will come together and help gather food items for Thanksgiving. This food drive is a proud tradition, and grades will help collect different kinds of Thanksgiving goods for families in the Sanford community.

What should you donate?
Mrs. Lemelin, Peer Helper advisor, shared that “9th graders bring instant mashed potatoes, 10th graders bring gravy and cranberry sauce, 11th graders bring canned veggies, and 12th graders bring in stuffing.” Each family will be receiving a “Thanksgiving food kit” and have students who attend SHS. These families will also receive full turkeys, pies, and more, plus the already fundraised canned goods.

On Monday, Nov. 2 the drive begins, and the grade that raises the most food will be rewarded with a class prize. Lemelin believes that the “food drive is always a successful event because we get to help over 50 families, which is really, really amazing. We do always need more donations from people.” The public is encouraged to drop off items as well.

The food drive is a community-based event where SHS needs all the help that they can get. Lemelin emphasized, “The more that classes can bring in food, the better it will be. But we’re very lucky that we have so many people who are willing to donate either here at school or from the community, and so it’s always a really successful event.” The Peer Helpers will assemble the kits once the food drive is over and distribute them to families in need.

President of the Peer Helpers, Shaneece Liscombe, encouraged students to “Not bring any expired food. Check the dates on them. We also do not want people putting food in the wrong boxes that are not for those.” The donation boxes will be found in the front of the school in the lobby on Monday, Nov. 2.

We encourage anyone who can contribute to the food drive to please do so, as everyone deserves a quality Thanksgiving meal.
